Will Dancing With The Stars contestants Alyson Hannigan and Mira Sorvino pull out ahead of the Season 32 premiere date?

Right now, ABC plans to air the Season 32 premiere this Tuesday night. However, picketers from the Writer’s Guild of America firmly demand that the network postpone Season 32 until the strikes are over. On top of that, the WGA is particularly upset that actresses Mira Sorvino and Alyson Hannigan plan to participate, even though they’re part of the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA).

Comedian Matt Walsh walked out of rehearsals after learning he was violating WGA striking rules by competing. So will Alyson Hannigan and Mira Sorvino follow suit?

WGA picketers want DWTS to completely halt production until the strikes end

As it currently stands, Dancing With The Stars isn’t breaking any striking rules by going on. However, the WGA feels that continuing production is encouraging studios to prolong the strike. The WGA strike began on May 2. Some believe that the strike could go into 2024 if negotiations don’t reach a resolution soon.

But How I Met Your Mother star Alyson Hannigan and Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion star Mira Sorvino aren’t part of the WGA. They’re part of SAG-AFTRA. So why do WGA picketers want them to back out too?

The SAG-AFTRA already confirmed that DWTS isn’t breaking any of its own strike rules. But many WGA members believe that Alyson Hannigan and Mira Sorvino should respectfully bow out. Deadline shares that WGA picketers started protesting at the rehearsal studio ahead of the Tuesday premiere.

DWTS reportedly employs one WGA writer and plans to continue without that employee until the strike resolves. But even so, picketers believe it’s in poor taste to allow the show to continue.

“The WGA respects all writing whether it’s a single writer on a feature film with 500 people or it’s a single writer on a TV show with 500 people; it’s all the same to us and we’re going to protect writing across the board,” one picketer outside the rehearsal studio told Deadline, clarifying why the union is so angry about the situation.

Will the show go on?

After WGA member Matt Walsh walked out of the rehearsal room, many speculated that Alyson Hannigan and Mira Sorvino would follow suit. Picketers outside the studio have made signs targeting the two actresses by name.

“The reason that it’s so important that Dancing With The Stars not move forward with scab writing is that it encourages the studio to make the strike last longer and to hold out to see if other shows will be able to move forward with scab writing. While it may put the crew for Dancing With The Stars back to work, that’s keeping every other crew in Hollywood out of work. This economy in LA is losing $30M a day because of what the companies have chosen not to do, the path of not negotiating, that they’ve chosen.” MacGyver executive producer David Slack told Deadline.

Neither Mira Sorvino nor Alyson Hannigan have publicly shared plans to leave the show. But with the premiere date closely approaching, they will have to make a decision soon.

If everything goes according to plan, Dancing With The Stars Season 32 will premiere at 8 PM Eastern time on Tuesday, September 26 on ABC. But at this point, anything could happen.
