‘Today’ Hoda Kotb Opens Up About Financial Hardship & Hefty Bills
On a recent segment of Today with Hoda & Jenna, Hoda Kotb opened up about her personal financial hardships and struggles with hefty bills. The topic came up while discussing Vanna White’s success at securing an extension of her contract with Wheel of Fortune. As fans know, Pat Sajak is retiring. And, Ryan Seacrest has signed on as the new host of the game show.
Many jaded fans of Wheel Of Fortune argued Vanna White should have been offered Pat’s job first given how long she’s been with the show. Sadly, some speculate she was not offered the position because she was a woman. Others, however, speculate she could have been offered the position. Maybe she simply didn’t want it?
Either way, Hoda and Jenna are also females in the same industry. So, the topic of men versus women was too enticing for them to pass up. In fact, Hoda Kotb fessed up that being a female in the talk show industry was no easy task. Early on in her career, she struggled to make ends meet. And, she believed it was simply because she was a woman.

While talking about Vanna White, Hoda admits she suspects one of the most challenging things for women to do in this industry is asking for a raise. Hoda continued to reveal she made a fraction of what her male co-anchors made for years. She was well aware of this and desperately needed a raise. Hoda, however, never asked for one. She feared retaliation if asking for a raise as a woman was viewed as being “difficult.”
The Today Show host was specifically referring to when she was a correspondent with NBC for Dateline from 1998 to 2007. At the time, she was pretty confident she was the “lowest-paid correspondent.” Moreover, she added it was no secret the male correspondents were paid far more.
I remember thinking to myself, ‘I can’t pay my bills here.’ I couldn’t pay all my bills at the same time. So I was like, ‘I’ll pay this one, and then pay that one.'”

Jenna Bush Hager Talks Of A Better Future
Jenna Bush Hager interjected to discuss the importance of teaching their daughters so the next generation does better. She notes the value in teaching their daughters to be bumble, but to also have the courage to go after what they deserve.
Hoda agreed with her co-star: “Both things can be true. You can have grace and humility and still ask for what you deserve. Both of those things can happen at the same time.”
