On Sunday, September 3, the devastating news broke that Steve is now on his deathbed. A Smash Mouth representative confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that Steve is suffering from several health issues. He’s currently in hospice care in his home. For the past several days, he has been surrounded by his loved ones, including his fiance.
The former lead singer is in the final stages of liver failure. He was previously being treated in the hospital. However, he’s now in the comfort of his home.
The representative noted that Steve has “only a week or so to live.” Finally, the rep said, “We hope that people respect Steve and his family’s privacy during this difficult time.”
For the past decade, Steve has dealt with a handful of serious health issues. It sounds like things have only gotten worse, which is why he’s now in hospice care.
Smash Mouth fans may recall hearing about his issues with alcohol abuse. He was previously diagnosed with cardiomyopathy. He collapsed on stage in 2016. A year later, his band postponed a few concerts as he needed medical attention for heart issues. He’s suffered from heart failure and acute Wernicke’s encephalopathy. Due to his health conditions, he has had poor speech, memory, and motor function.
