WBTV Reporter Steve Crump Dead At 65: Cause Of Death
According to The Sun, WBTV reporter Steve Crump has passed away at the age of 65. His cause of death was confirmed to be connected to his five-year battle with cancer. Sadly, the journalist was diagnosed with colon cancer back in 2018. Steve Crump had just hosted a dinner for survivors of cancer a few weeks prior to his passing.
Survived by his wife, Cathy, she issued a statement regarding his passing.
Our hearts are breaking as we share the news of the passing of our beloved Steve. He was determined to share the truth and broadcasting became the chosen vehicle. His true passion was being a part of the lives of the people in his community and sharing their truths. We will remain steadfast and never forget his passion.”
WBTV also issued a statement with a heavy heart confirming Steve was a dedicated journalist. And, he did an incredible job reporting stories to the community of Charlotte, North Carolina.

The station penned in their statement: “He was also a cherished colleague, friend and mentor to many, both in the WBTV newsroom and throughout the country.”
Other tributes poured in on social media as those who watched his stories and those who worked with him came together to mourn his passing.

A Closer Look At His Career
Steve Crump kicked off his career as a reporter for WBTV back in 1984. During his career, he covered several noteworthy moments in history including Hurricane Hugo of 1989 and Ray Carruth’s murder trial. His coverage also included several other natural disasters and a few overseas assignments.
Back in April of this year, Steve Crump’s health took a turn. He was in the hospital for nearly two weeks because of his cancer. He ended up recovering and hosted the Five Year Cancer Survivors Brunch a few weeks ago.

Steve Crump battling cancer for five years was nothing short of a miracle. One of his doctors early on when he was diagnosed actually recommended he be put on hospice care back in 2018 with slim chances of surviving. Then, he went on to fight for five years before losing his battle.
A week after hosting the survivors’ brunch, Steve took to social media to joke he was “back on the pokey” as he shared a photo of himself back in the hospital.
During the course of his career, Steve had the honor of winning several Emmy Awards for his incredible work as a reporter.
