Legendary Dire Straits Guitarist Jack Sonni Dead At 68

According to The Daily Mail, the band took to social media to announce Jack Sonni had passed away. As fans of the British rock band know, he was frequently referred to as “the other guitarist.”

Jack Sonni was 68 years old at the time of his death. At this time, his cause of death has not been made public.

It was just a few days ago that the band announced the guitarist wasn’t feeling well and would be unable to participate in their next few performances. Here’s the post the band made on Tuesday of this week regarding his health:

Dear fans, unfortunately, Jack Sonni will not be able to participate in our next gigs because of health problems. Jack get better soon, we are waiting for you! With love, the DSL family.”

Tragically, fans of Dire Straits can assume that Jack did not recover from whatever health issues he was battling with when the announcement was made.

How He Joined Dire Straits

Jack Sonni was employed at a well-known guitar shop in New York City back in the 1970s. This was when he first connected with David and Mark Knopfler. In 1985, he was offered an incredible opportunity. The opportunity to play with the band during a charity concert. The concert was to raise money for the famine in Ethiopia.

Sadly, the band disbanded ten years later in 1995.

Following his stint as “the other guitarist” for Dire Straits, Jack collaborated with other musicians. He, however, did hang up his hat on his music career when he welcomed his twin girls into the world back in 1988. Fans of the guitarist were sad he walked away from his guitar. But, they could not fault him for walking away to be with his children.

Jack did return to the music world with his band The Leisure Class. He, however, announced he was taking a break from music back in June of this year to focus on writing a novel.

He penned in his final social media post: “Well chilluns, the last social media post for the foreseeable future as I dive into getting my novel in shape for my agent’s publisher hunt.”

In response to news of his passing, fans of Dire Straits have flooded social media to pay tribute to the late guitarist.

One individual penned: “I worked with Jack – didn’t know him too well but he was one of those guys, you knew was awesome because everyone said he was. So sad.”

Rest in peace Jack Sonni #DireStraits, a h*ll of a musician.” Another added.

Many agreed his death marked “the end of an era” as he was an incredible musician.
