According to the Lifetime synopsis, this is the fictionalized real-life story of Mari Gilbert, whose grief turned manifested into some major sleuthing. Her daughter Shannon (Katharine Isabelle) was a sex worker who had gone on a “date” on Long Island. But, she never came back home.
Although the police did not help, Mari was determined to find out what became of her daughter. The result was nearly a dozen bodies found in shallow graves. They were all found in the area of Jones State Park in 2010-2011. All the women were in shallow graves at Gilgo Beach.
Without this mother’s need to find the truth about her daughter’s murder, this case could have remained unsolved even longer. She accused the police of “stalling and avoiding.” Despite 20 women murdered in the same area, the police found no connection. However, Mari never gave up on finding the truth.
Sadly, the grieving mother never learned who killed her daughter. That is because her other daughter, Sarra Elizabeth Gilbert, stabbed her to death in 2016. This happened almost exactly seven years to the date of the arrest of the suspected Gilgo Beach killer.

However, this 2021 movie has been updated by Emmy-winning journalist Deborah Norville. She is the executive producer of this movie.
In this update, she is reporting the latest news about this case. Norville shares more Ripped From The Headlines information since the accused killer, Rex Heuermann, has been found and arrested. Moreover, this arrest is brand-new, and true crime fans will want to learn of the details and how this pertains to this Lifetime movie.
