‘The Idol’ Finale Shades Kanye West
The Idol released its Season 1 finale and took a harsh shot at Kanye West. This is not surprising, as the HBO series has been controversial since it took the air. Seeing it take aim at one of the most polarizing musicians in the world seemed par for the course for the drama series.
Here is how The Idol threw shade at Kanye West and what the quip was all about.
The Idol bashes Kanye West in season finale
The controversial HBO series The Idol aired its season finale on Sunday night and it took aim at Kanye West. The slam saw a character make one statement, and it was a comparison to one of Kanye’s most polarizing statements. In the HBO series, Lily-Rose Depp stars as a pop star named Jocelyn who suffered a mental breakdown and had to cancel her last tour. She took a break and then did something that made things worse.
Jocelyn, who shares a lot in common with stars like Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears, hooked up with a cult leader. This was a man named Tedros, who sold himself as a self-help guru, but was really a cult leader who did some very slimy things in his time on the show. Real-life pop star The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye) played Tedros on the show.
In the finale, Jocelyn put on a showcase for her management team, hoping to get her career moving again. However, when she mentioned she was selling out arenas before her breakdown, her agent had a pointed comment in response. He simply looked at her and said, “You know, f–king Kanye was filling arenas until he decided to start following Adolf Hitler.” This was clearly a shot at Tedros and what the agent felt about this man, but it was also a direct shot at Kanye West.
What did this Kanye West slam mean on The Idol?
In November 2022, a former employee sued Kanye West for alleged “anti-Semitic” comments and racist behavior. This included moments where Kanye reportedly praised Adolf Hitler in business meetings, although Kanye denied ever making those comments. However, NBC News spoke to six other employees who said that Kanye had praised Hitler in the past. Another former employee said that Kanye often praised how good the Nazis were at propaganda.
CNN also reported that Kanye wanted to name his 2018 album Hitler, but ended up changing his mind. This led to Kanye making several off-the-wall anti-Semitic comments on Twitter, which resulted in Kanye losing his deals with companies like Adidas, Vogue, Chase, JP Morgan, and Gap. This has also led to his ex-wife Kim Kardashian mourning the loss of the Kanye she married, saying that he is a different person now.
