Yellowstone’s first prequel spinoff was 1883, about James and Margaret Dutton. These are John Dutton’s direct ancestors who were the first to go across the Western Frontier in search of a piece of land to call their own. That is how the Duttons wound up in Montana.

This series starred real-life couple Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, as well as Sam Elliott, and Isabel May. Most of all, it was a big hit.

Therefore, why didn’t this Yellowstone spinoff get Season 2?

Why Didn’t  Yellowstone Prequel 1883 Get Season 2?

A lot of people watched and loved the first Yellowstone prequel spinoff 1883. However, Paramount did not choose to renew it for a second season. That was despite this spinoff being the biggest cable TV debut in over six years. The Paramount+ audience was eight million viewers. Why didn’t this happen?

According to an interview with Deadline, Taylor Sheridan revealed there was a good reason. He explained, “We wanted to make a 10-hour movie with an ending, and that’s what we did.” Instead of another season sharing the story of what the Duttons do next, there are Easter Eggs in the other prequels like 1923.

Sheridan feels he told the story of how they got to that exact spot, and he will allow the next generations to slowly reveal what happened to the characters that survived this move west.

What is 1883 Spinoff Lawman: Bass Reeves About?

Unlike Yellowstone or the other spinoffs, Bass Reeves is about a real person. Bass Reeves was born into slavery, escaped the Confederate Army, and lived amongst a Native American tribe. Eventually, he was allowed to be free. Then, he became a U.S. Marshall.

David Oyelowo stars as the lead, along with Mo Brings Plenty, the Yellowstone fan-favorite, and Dennis Quaid. This series is the only Taylor Sheridan series currently in production. It seems likely it will return before 2023 is over, assuming there is not a SAG-AFTRA strike.

Yellowstone Sequel Prequel 1923 Will Have Two Seasons

Unlike 1883, one Yellowstone spinoff prequel is getting two seasons. That spinoff is 1923, starring Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren. This series was originally called 1932 when it was first announced. However, creator Taylor Sheridan realized he had a lot more story to tell. Therefore, he started the timeline of this series nine years earlier.

In addition, in the first part of the series, there are the aforementioned Easter Eggs that reveal what became of James and Margaret Dutton. Now, Jacob Dutton (Ford), James’s brother, is the leader of the ranch, after his brother and sister-in-law passed on.

The second season has not yet started filming. Currently, it is scheduled to start filming later in the year. This could be delayed due to the WGA strike. Either way, it won’t air on Paramount+ until 2024.
