Considered by many to be “the greatest football player of all time,” fans of the sport everywhere are devastated to learn Jim Brown has passed away. His beautiful wife Monique confirmed his passing and issued an official statement via Instagram.

It is with profound sadness that I announce the passing of my husband, Jim Brown. He passed away peacefully last night at our LA home. To the world he was an activist, actor and football star. To our family, he was a loving and wonderful husband, father and grandfather. Our hearts are broken.”

Sources close to the legendary football icon tell TMZ that while his death is heartbreaking it didn’t come as a total surprise as his loved ones knew he hadn’t been doing very well. Several of his close friends had paid him a visit recently in case his health took a turn for the worse including Eric Dickerson, Flavor Flav, and Marshall Faulk.

Jim Brown kicked off his incredible career in 1957 as a first-round pick. During his career, he won three different NFL MVP awards. Per ESPN, Jim Brown was coined as the best running back of all time. He played for the Cleveland Browns for nine seasons from 1957 to 1965. He was the leader of the league in rushing for eight of those years. With Jim Brown on the team, the Cleveland Brons made it to the league championship three different times. The team ended up winning the title in 1964.

His career extended far beyond that of being a football player. He went on to be an actor starring in a number of films including Any Given Sunday and The Dirty Dozen. In addition to being an actor and an athlete, he was also extremely involved as a civil rights activist.
