‘Kelly Clarkson Show’ Accused Of Toxic Work Environment
Staffers on The Kelly Clarkson Show have accused it of promoting a toxic work environment behind the scenes. This comes across as shocking to fans who watch the show, as Kelly Clarkson has become one of the most beloved daytime talk show hosts in recent years.
Here is what the staffers have said and what it could mean for the show.
The Kelly Clarkson Show accused of toxic atmosphere
The Kelly Clarkson Show premiered on NBC in 2019 and immediately became one of the top-rated daytime talk shows on TV. It was not only a huge success on its own, but it was so successful that NBC chose to put Kelly in place of Ellen DeGeneres as the network’s top talk show host when Ellen retired from the role.
However, it seems that the show is not as rosy and fun behind the scenes as it is when the cameras are rolling. In a recent Rolling Stone report, staffers on the show have called it out for a toxic atmosphere behind the scenes. These complaints include being overworked and underpaid. There are also accusations that working on the show is “traumatizing” for mental health.
This isn’t apparently people who are new to this side of show business. The people who spoke out are veterans of the industry. They said the high-pressure environment of daytime television has always been there. However, they also said that this show made it seem like it could make a difference and has not. This included comments from one current and 10 former employees from the show.
Kelly Clarkson and NBC did not respond to the accusations
Neither Kelly Clarkson nor NBC responded to Rolling Stone when offered a chance to tell their side of the story. This might not be a surprise. One person said that “NBC is protecting the show because it’s their new money maker, but Kelly has no clue how unhappy her staff is.” This makes it seem like Kelly might not be the cause of this and wasn’t aware of the situation.
The Kelly Clarkson Show brings in 1.4 million daily viewers and it is actually growing in numbers by the year. This is impressive since most other shows on television are dropping viewers as more people move to streaming. Alex Duda works as the showrunner after serving as a producer on Steve Harvey and The Tyra Banks Show. It is Duda and not Clarkson the staffers blame for the situation.
“I think Alex Duda’s a monster,” one former employee said. “I have a friend who’s an executive producer who warned me about taking this job because apparently, she has done this on every show she’s worked on.” They also said she shields Kelly from employee concerns.
Staffers don’t blame Kelly Clarkson
One other staffer said that Kelly Clarkson is “fantastic” and she treats everyone with dignity and respect. They also said that Kelly would be shocked to learn they weren’t paid for the Christmas hiatus, but they said Duda keeps that information from the host. On top of that, staffers accused Duda of cursing at them and other producers of bullying lower staff members.
Seven different former staffers said they told HR in their exit interviews what was happening. Another said they followed-up call with HR, but HR did nothing. They even said the producers who were named as unprofessional ended up getting promotions. “There’s a culture of nonaccountability for some people, and that needs to change,” one staffer said.
