MTV Movie & TV Awards Bombs Amidst WGA Strike
The MTV Movie & TV Awards are usually one of the most entertaining ceremonies during award season. This is because it is more about the entertaining blockbusters and genre TV shows and less about prestigious releases. However, the bombasting celebrity moments were missing this year. This caused the ceremony to bomb for fans.
Here is how the WGA Strike helped ruin this year’s award ceremony.
MTV Movie & TV Awards spoiled by WGA Strike
The 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards typically has an extensive red carpet pre-show, often funny hosts, and plenty of celebrities having fun. They then received awards in one of the more fan-friendly award ceremonies in Hollywood each year. This year, none of that happened and fans were not happy.
The Writer’s Guild of America (WGA) is on strike and this meant that many Hollywood stars refused to attend the ceremony, showing their solidarity with the writers. This included Drew Barrymore. The actress was supposed to host the show, but she backed out and said that she wouldn’t attend as a show of support for the writers. “I will pivot from hosting the MTV Movie & TV Awards live in solidarity with the strike,” she said about her decision.
She was just one of many stars who refused to attend the ceremony as they showed solidarity with the writers. This caused MTV to change its plans at the last minute. They pre-taped the ceremony and revealed this would allow them to deliver the normal sneak peeks and fun moments that fans were used to.
That didn’t happen. During the awards, fans took to Twitter to make their displeasure known. “These MTV movie awards sucks!! It’s not live. It’s trash,” one person tweeted. “This might be the worst #MTVAwards to date,” another wrote. “That was the saddest sh*t I ever watched in my life,” a third commented.
Why are the writers on strike?
This was all because of the WGA Strike, and the actors and film crew members who skipped the show were all about showing solidarity. This strike has a lot riding on it because the writers want to receive fair treatment when it comes to their jobs in Hollywood and on TV.
There is also a chance that other unions could follow suit if the writers are still striking at the end of summer. The Directors and Actors Guilds could also join up with the writers. This could completely shut down Hollywood if something isn’t done.
Everyone has the same problem. The studios and networks don’t have fair pay practices concerning streaming services, and they hide their streaming numbers. This means that writers, directors, and actors have no idea how much the shows and movies are making streamers.
The Writer’s Guild is also concerned after some producers have mentioned AI and the chance that computers could write screenplays. This could cut out humans when it comes to storytelling in the future. So far, the writers and studios are still far apart in negotiations. As long as the strike shuts down Hollywood, expect more disappointments like the recent MTV awards ceremony.
