Gordon Ramsay Breaks Down In Tears Over Death Of Fellow Chef
Gordon Ramsay broke down in tears while talking about his memories of his friend Jock Zonfrillo. The MasterChef Australia judge died suddenly at the age of 46. Ramsay was talking about his late friend with the Australian television program The Sunday Project and couldn’t control his emotions.
Here is what Ramsay had to say and the legacy left behind by Jock Zonfrillo.
Gordon Ramsay remembers Jock Zonfrillo
Jock Zonfrillo died suddenly at the age of 46. The Scottish-born chef owned the Orana restaurant in South Australia and has worked as a judge on MasterChef Australia since 2019, alongside Andy Allen and Melissa Leong. He also started the Orana Foundation in 2016, which preserved historical cooking techniques and ingredients of Indigenous Australians.
On April 30, 2023, police made a welfare check at Zagame’s House Hotel and found Zonfrillo dead in his hotel room. There was no cause of death listed and police are not treating the death as suspicious. The chef left behind his third wife, Lauren Fried, and their two children (Alfie, 5, and Isla, 2). He also had two daughters (Ava and Sophia) from his previous marriages.
Gordon Ramsay, also a Scottish-born chef, broke down as he spoke to the news channel about spending time with Jock when they were both in London before Jock moved to Australia. He said there was a brotherhood among them and other chefs and this was a hard loss for the community.
Ramsay broke down in tears and called Jock “one of the greatest chefs of our time” while also talking about his love of food. He went on to say, “If there’s one thing that we’ve done as chefs, it’s we’ve united and we’re talking about the good times.” It was there that he couldn’t continue as he broke down in tears.
Other chefs talk about their love of Jock Zonfrillo
Other major names in the industry also shared their stories about Jock. They had similar reactions as Gordon Ramsay did when talking about their friend. Shannon Bennett, George Calombaris, Matt Moran, and Ramsay all went to lunch together before the airing of the episode to reminisce about Jock.
Also on the episode were names like Nigella Lawson and Marco Pierre White. “The ripples have been devastating. No one’s going to get over this quickly,” Ramsay shared. “Sorry. It’s just so painful. That’s all.”
Australian chef Curtis Stone called Jock “kind, fair, genuine, and honest.” He also said that Jock treated everyone with respect as long as they deserved it, showing something he might share in common with Ramsay.
