Jerry Springer’s Family Died In Holocaust, Parents Escaped
Despite living in the United States for most of his life, talk show host Jerry Springer was born in Golders Green, London back in 1944. Shockingly, his Jewish parents were able to flee Nazi, Germany just days before the Second World War broke out. Unfortunately, many other members of Jerry’s family were not so lucky. Tragically, both of the talk show host’s grandmothers passed away in the Holocaust.
Jerry Springer’s family perishes in Holocaust, parents flee
Per Celebrity Net Worth, Jerry Springer was actually born in an Underground station of Highgate in London. His parents were hiding out there, away from the World War II bombing in Germany. According to the Who Do You Think You Are Magazine, the talk show host’s parents were lucky enough to escape Nazi, Germany just in time.
Sadly, all of the knowledge of his family’s history died with his grandmothers. The talk show host, however, appeared on an episode of the documentary called Who Do You Think You Are? with the hopes of learning more about his ancestors. During his quest, he took a trip to Landsberg (which is now Gorzów) to see where his father owned a very successful shoe shop. Shifting threw the town archives, he was able to learn more about what forced his family to leave Berlin. He also learned of his great-grandfather, Abraham Springer, who campaigned against the hate that was directed at the Jewish community.
My family [were] victims of anti-Semitism for the last 150 years, but there he was at the centre of it, fighting back. I’m proud.”
His grandmothers died: Selma Springer and Marie Kallman
Perhaps the most painful part of his journey brought him to the fate of his two grandmothers named Selma Springer and Marie Kallman. With the help of a cousin named Erica (born in Berlin), Jerry Springer learns that the family did try to get Marie out. But, they were not successful and she was sent to Lodz, Poland. Sadly, Jerry learns his grandmother Marie perished at a Chelmno Extermination Camp.
Now, the talk show host knew his grandmother Selma also died in the Holocaust. He, however, didn’t have the details. As the episode progressed, he found answers. She was deported to a Jewish ghetto called Theresienstadt. Now, most who lived at Theresienstadt were murdered at Auschwitz. Jerry, however, learned that his grandmother Selma passed away at a ghetto hospital when she was 72.
Overwhelmed with sadness, the talk show host discovers a relative he didn’t know existed. The son of another Springer that managed to escape Nazi, Germany around the same time as Jerry’s parents.
