Frank Ocean fans are up in arms after a last-minute announcement that there will be no live stream of his Coachella set. The popular R&B singer has been missing from the public spotlight for more than half a decade, and his long-awaited return has left many wondering if the wait was worth it.
Coachella 2023 came and went over the weekend and had a number of memorable moments from big artists. One of the shows with the highest anticipation was Frank Ocean. Rumors about new music were swirling amidst his festival appearance from this past Sunday. A last-second announcement from the performance, however, has many fans furious. For some, it may just be the last straw from the notoriously-flakey artist.
No Live Stream
Coachella is a music festival that fans tune in from around the world to see. They’ve been live-streaming the performances on YouTube for years now, giving fans without the money or resources to go to the wildly popular festival a way to still watch their favorite musicians. There were many assumptions that the Frank Ocean set would be getting a live stream. Mainly because no one with Coachella or YouTube said anything to the contrary. That is, until a last-second announcement before Frank went live.

The official YouTube Twitter page gave confirmation mere hours before Ocean was set to perform that there would be no live stream. The result was droves of angry fans flooding social media to express their displeasure. One fan on Reddit even said he threw a live stream watch party only for the cancellation to come at the last second.
The frustration is palpable after years of waiting and no news about any new content from Ocean. This isn’t anything new for the singer, though. His second and third albums, Blond and Endless, came in 2016 again after years of essentially radio silence. He’s an artist who clearly values his privacy away from the public eye, and feels no obligation to give anyone updates.

New Frank Ocean
So is there new Frank Ocean music coming anytime soon? It’s unlikely. The man said it himself during a mid-set speech at his performance. He said his primary reason for doing Coachella this year was to honor his late little brother, Ryan Breaux. Ryan passed away in August 2020 after a car crash. He was only 18 years old.

It’s clear from Frank Ocean’s speech that he’s still mourning the loss of his brother and isn’t ready to retake the spotlight. His Coachella performance was a way for him to honor the memory of someone he’s lost. With that in mind, a lot of the fuss over his show begins to look a lot sillier.
Frank Ocean did say that there’s an album during his speech, but that it’s not time yet. It’s possible that there will be an announcement about new music sometime later this year.
