‘Big Bang Theory’ Spin-Off In Talks For HBO Max
A lot of changes are going on after the Warner Bros. Discovery merger. The most recent news that broke this week was that the new company would eliminate “HBO” from its streaming service. HBO Max will become Max and there will be a slight change in the type of programming on the streaming service.
One of the new shows that might be coming to the rebranded Max will be a Big Bang Theory spin-off.
Big Bang Theory spin-off in the works
The main reason that Warner Bros. Discovery wants to change the name of HBO Max to just Max is that they think people don’t watch HBO Max because they think it is just “prestige” television. The new company wants to ensure people that not everything on the streaming service is prestige and there is “something for everyone.”
The big thing that the new Max wants to focus on is well-known franchises. This means more DC Comics, Harry Potter, and Game of Thrones spin-offs. It also means taking popular TV shows and milking them for what they can get out of them.
Big Bang Theory already had one spin-off with the popular Young Sheldon. However, with that spin-off possibly ending with its seventh season, Max is looking at something else. Max is planning to develop another spin-off set in that world, although the details of it are being kept under wraps.
All 12 seasons of The Big Bang Theory and the first five seasons of Young Sheldon are on HBO Max right now. The Big Bang Theory debuted in 2007 and was the No. 1 comedy in the world when it finished in 2019. It was also the longest-running multi-camera series in TV history, with 279 episodes.
The series won 10 Emmy Awards with 55 nominations.
HBO Max bringing new tiers to service
Warner-Bros. Discovery is making a lot of changes to HBO Max when they change it into Max. The biggest change will be the subscription model. There will be a pricing tier now, whereas before it was just one cost. There will be an ad-free level, but there will also be a level where it costs more than almost any other streaming service.
The Max Ad-Lite version is $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year. That is more than Netflix charges for its new ad-supported tier ($6.99). Paramount and Peacock had ad-tiers that only costs $4.99 a month. Max subscribers will pay the same for ads that Netflix subscribers pay for ad-free.
The Max Ad Free tier is $15.99 a month for regular HD definition and two concurrent streams. There is also a Max Ultimate Ad Free, which is $19.99 a month for four streams at 4K UHD. The 4K is the same price as Netflix for the same thing, while Netflix is 50 cents cheaper for the HD version.
