Bringing Up Bates star Trace’s wife Lydia Bates is being slammed online for seemingly making a rude comment about her mother-in-law Kelly Jo’s body. Before this incident, fans had wondered if Lydia might be a bit of a “mean girl.” Now, they feel like a recent picture is proof that she’s not as nice as she might appear online. On Reddit, fans reposted a photo from Kelly Jo’s birthday tribute to Lydia. In honor of Lydia’s 25th birthday, Kelly Jo took to Instagram and shared a sweet slideshow of her favorite moments with Lydia.
One particular photo is from when Lydia and Trace shared their baby news with Kelly Jo. They told the rest of the family at the “I Love You Day” party a little bit later.
In the photo from the announcement, Kelly Jo and Lydia stood together and held a box of donuts. On the inside of the lid, a handwritten message reads:
“Eat up! I can’t be the only one with a belly around here! Baby Bates coming September 2023.”

On Reddit, the Bates family’s fans and critics are pretty upset. Many are calling out Lydia Bates for saying something so insensitive to her mother-in-law. Others feel that there are so many other ways she could have announced the news.
In the past, Kelly Jo has made her insecurities known. So, fans think that Lydia should have known this and not gone this particular route for the announcement. One Reddit user said, “My jaw dropped…I could never tell my MIL she has a belly…it’s so rude.”
Someone else added, “There must be many ways to announce your first baby to your mother-in-law. This isn’t clever or funny – it is tacky.” Yet another commented, “Wow that’s a really tasteless ‘gift’ especially when Kelly’s been pretty vocal about her struggles with weight. Lydia is odd.”
Many other fans are chiming in to talk about how rude Lydia’s comment came across. Hopefully, Kelly Jo wasn’t hurt by this somewhat insensitive message from her daughter-in-law.

She may have been trying to make a joke but it can be taken as a slam or joke.
Omg of course not! What is wrong with people. If the message is coming from Lydia, she is saying she wants everyone else to eat so she (Lydia) isn’t the only ONE with a belly. No where in that message does she suggest that anyone else has a belly. It is exactly the opposite of what people are implying.
I agree 100%. I am sorry your mind went in that direction. She was asking others to eat donuts with her (Lydia) so she (Lydia) would not be the only one with a big belly. This in no way says anything about Kelly. Just take Kelly out of the picture and you will get it.
Lydia seems a little rude. Even before moving in to the apartment Carlin left she made remarks about how they had to do so much cleaning. Carlin was pregnant, had the baby and was sick! Lydia is just mean… doesn’t fit in like the other in-laws.
