The Bringing Up Bates Family Has Many Expenses
It goes without saying that raising 19 kids was not easy or cheap for Kelly and Gil Bates. They did the best they could, but the expenses were quite high with so many kids. Even though many of their kids have now moved out and gotten married, there’s still lots to pay for, from groceries to weddings.
Not only do Gil and Kelly have 19 kids, but they also had them all very close in age. So, these expenses just kept growing without the parents having a chance to catch their breaths. Fortunately, it all has seemingly worked out. Their more than 10 seasons of Bringing Up Bates on UPtv certainly seemed to help.
Now, fans are discussing the Bates kids’ medical and dental care and the crazy amount of money Gil likely had to spend.
Ingenious Way Gil Bates Paid For All The Kids’ Braces
On Reddit, a Bringing Up Bates fan posted several photos of the Bates kids who have had braces. Out of the 19 kids, almost all of them have ended up needing braces at some point.

One fan asked how Gil Bates was able to pay for braces before they started making more money on Bringing Up Bates. Someone else recalled, “I remember from an old episode Gil said something about doing trade work for an orthodontist to pay for some of their braces. Not sure if ALL of them had the same payment arrangement but that’s how the older kids got theirs.”
As others questioned this payment arrangement, someone else pointed out that it’s not uncommon in church groups.
Another fan said, “In that episode he does count off how many have had braces, I think of the older kids, Nathan is the only one who hasn’t.” Then, they continued, “I don’t think Jackson has had them. I think Ellie has, [and] Callie & Jeb will need them.”
