My 600-Lb. Life: Mark Rutland 2023 Update: Where Is He Now?
Hailing from Orlando, Florida, 42-year-old Mark Rutland weighed in at 715 pounds during his first appointment with Dr. Now. The TLC doctor told him that a person at his weight should be able to follow his 1,200-calorie diet and lose 100-120 pounds in a month. Following his diet with just a few blunders, Mark was able to lose just shy of 100 pounds weighing in at 618.
When Mark visited the TLC doctor again, his weight loss continued as he dropped to 576. At this point, Dr. Now was ready to approve Mark for surgery. Unfortunately, Mark Rutland wasn’t super on board with the idea. For starters, he didn’t want to move to Texas. Moreover, he thought having the surgery felt like cheating. And, he really wanted to lose the weight on his own.
He proceeded to ask the doctor if he would be willing to work with him and let him continue his program without the surgery. Dr. Now made Mark a deal. If he was able to continue his weight loss progress, he would help him. But, if he hit a plateau with his progress, he would insist he moves to Texas for surgery.
Unfortunately, this is where Mark really hit a wall in his weight loss. The next time he weighed in, he actually gained a few pounds. At the weigh-in after that, he only lost a single pound. Mark Rutland had reached a point where he was going to a gym to work with a personal trainer three times a week. And, he had a job again. So, he still wasn’t ready to get the surgery even though he had hit the wall with the weight loss that Dr. Now told him about.
Has He Continued Losing Weight
Updated photos and video clips of Mark Rutland reveal he’s still a fairly big guy. But, his face has slimmed down significantly. So, it is safe to assume he’s still working on his weight loss progress. But, as far as 2023 updates are concerned, it does not appear as if he’s really had issues with gaining any of the weight back.
Per videos on his TikTok and Instagram, Mark doesn’t seem too excited about his episode airing as he realizes people are getting to see him at rock bottom. He, however, admits he’s in a much better place than he was when he first started filming the series.

I was actually a little angry with him He worked so hard to get to the goal the doctor set, and made it. He is very stubborn and pig headed and is not willing to listen to what anyone says. He turns himself into a victim and turns off his ears. If he doesn’t wise up he won’t ever lose more weight and regain his health.
In case people think I am a fat hater I myself had weight loss surgery. I am not at my goal weight but I’m also 50 lbs lighter than I was. I know I probably would have kept on gaining if I hadn’t taken advantage of this tool
I think it was very smart to do it on your own but when you saw that the weight wasn’t coming off as quickly you should have listened to dr Now and done the surgery and you’d have been at your goal very dumb idea pigheaded and an idiot!
I appreciate what Mark is trying to do and why he wants to do it the real life way instead of shrinking his stomach aka the artificial way. I don’t know why Dr. Now or the therapist or his dad can’t understand he wants to fix his life his way. I am surprised he did not drop more weight but maybe he is eating more than we saw. I hope he makes his goal but don’t rule out the surgery if the weight loss stalls out. PS: his dad is a dick and undermines him at every chance.

I dont know why he won’t get the surgery it is a tool as eating smaller meals going to the gym and on and on. he wants to do it on his own. well guess what mark you won’t and you proved it that you need surgery to help you lose the weight. so enough already do it and you still have work to do after the surgery to maintain your weight goal. the surgery is just part of the process in your journey
I know exactly why he wouldn’t get the surgery !! He didn’t want to leave mommy an no one called
Him out on it!! He is afraid to be alone an become a man not a child under his parents eye. Also no one in family said mom a dad can’t be caretakers again when he gains all the weight back!! The poor parents can’t have a life alone !! Worked hard raised there kids a can’t enjoy there golden years!! That’s what I wanted someone to say!! Very selfish of mark in my eyes
He is annoying and he will never lose on his own. And his mother is enabling him. Want dessert Mark? Seriously!!
I don’t see someone who is afraid of surgery or even afraid of leaving mom and dad behind. What I see is depression and the lack of energy and motivation that goes with it. I watch these shows with Dr. Now and see how they state only 5% are successful. Why not stop trying to get people to starve themselves on a 1200 calorie diet and get them some real help with a good psychiatrist to deal with their depression. And why must they lose weight at lightning speed? I think if they just ate 1/3 less, got some moderate consistent exercise even as simple as walking, and found a good therapist, the results would probably be much higher than 5%.
Oh dear Mark, the trouble is clear to me,you dont want to have to move to Houston on your own! You are not afraid of the surgery, you are afraid of being there on your own!
