Selena Gomez Says ‘My Mind & Me’ Almost Didn’t Happen
Selena Gomez admitted that her new documentary My Mind & Me almost didn’t happen. The documentary is now available for streaming on Apple TV. In her cover story with Rolling Stone, Selena talked about the vulnerable film that followed the most difficult years of her life, including her struggles with mental illness and Lupus.
She didn’t intentionally sign off on the documentary so she could reveal all these sides to herself. Selena was so nervous about the release that she almost didn’t fall through with it. Read on to learn more about the details of the documentary.
Speaks to Rolling Stone about My Mind & Me
Selena Gomez opens up about her struggles with anxiety, bipolar disorder, and psychosis. In 2018, she heard voices in her head. Selena only knows a fraction of what happened. The “Rare” singer ended up in a treatment facility, where she spent several months.
She also told Rolling Stone that she wasn’t sure she was ready to tell her story. Selena Gomez has gone through a lot in such a short time. My Mind & Me is a documentary that focuses mostly on mental illness. Instead of being a celebrity puff piece, Selena shares the darkest moments of her life. She had to cancel her 2016 Revival tour and check into a treatment facility.
At the time, she was dealing with extreme anxiety and insecurity issues. She felt like she wasn’t enough and not making her fans happy. There were also moments when Selena Gomez isn’t able to get out of bed and roams around her house. She also finds herself dissociating from her fame. The singer struggles to get the media to understand her and listen to her during interviews. It’s so raw that she almost didn’t sign off on its release.
“I’m just so nervous,” Selena Gomez revealed in her Rolling Stone cover story. “Because I have the platform I have, it’s kind of like I’m sacrificing myself a little bit for a greater purpose. I don’t want to sound dramatic, but I almost wasn’t going to put this out. God’s honest truth, a few weeks ago, I wasn’t sure I could do it.”
Selena Gomez briefly mentions Justin Bieber
The documentary includes moments when paparazzi hunted down Selena Gomez and asked her about her on-and-off relationship with Justin Bieber. It also shows some of the tabloid headlines and late-night shows that mocked their relationship. She admitted that their split was the “best thing that ever happened” to her.
The two broke up for good in 2018. Just a few months later, the “Sorry” singer married model Hailey Baldwin. Selena Gomez and Hailey recently connected at an event. In her documentary, she feels that her old relationship was a good thing.

While the documentary doesn’t mention her relationship with the Canadian pop star, it offers a look into Selena’s insecurities. She asks her team when she’s ever “going to be good enough by myself.” Selena no longer wanted to be associated with her ex. Their breakup led her to write her hit single “Lose You To Love Me” with songwriters Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter.
The trio wrote the song in 45 minutes flat. Selena Gomez used that negative moment and turned it into a positive one. She shared that she went “through the worst possible heartbreak,” which left her confused. However, she feels “it was the best thing that ever happened to me.”
