‘Star Wars: The Acolyte’ Currently Filming For Disney+ Release
The best Star Wars series is currently streaming on Disney+, with Andor telling the best story since The Mandalorian’s first season. Hoping to capitalize on the success of this series, Disney is moving full speed ahead and just started filming the next big series for its streaming network.
Star Wars: The Acolyte just started filming for an expected late 2023 or early 2024 release. Here is what you need to know.
Star Wars: The Acolyte starts filming
According to several sources (via Bespin Bulletin), Disney has started filming the Star Wars: The Acolyte series for Disney+. According to the reports, the cast and crew show several scenes on the outdoor set at Shinefield Studios. There were several cast members going to and from the set during these filming days. Lead actor Amandla Stenberg was also seen in the group.
While Disney nor Lucasfilm have reported that filming is underway, the sets do exist at Shinefield Studios for the upcoming series. From reports, it is a small village or town. The announcement that filming has begun followed a lot of casting announcements for the series. This includes Stenberg, who is joining the cast as the protagonist, although her character’s name remains unknown. Stenberg previously starred in The Hunger Games as Rue.
Other cast members recently announced include Jodie Turner-Smith, Lee Jung-Jae, and Manny Jacinto, although none of their roles have been announced either.
What is The Acolyte about?
Star Wars: The Acolyte is an upcoming series created by Leslye Headland (who also co-created Russian Doll). The two leads are played by Amandla Stenberg and Lee Jung-Jae in a story that is set at the end of the High Republic era. The synopsis also says that it is a world of “shadowy secrets and emerging dark side powers.”
This is also a series that will go back in time in the Star Wars universe, taking place about 100 years before Star Wars Episode I – The Phantom Menace. That will make it very different from what has come so far on Disney+.
Both The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett took place after Return of the Jedi. Obi-Wan Kenobi took place between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. Andor took place during the same time frame as Obi-Wan. That means that Star Wars: The Acolyte is the first series to take place in a historical context to all of the movies.
On top of Star Wars: The Acolyte, there are three other announced upcoming Star Wars shows coming to Disney+. Ahoska will hit in 2023 about the popular Ahsoka Tano from The Clone Wars and The Mandalorian. Rosario Dawson stars as Ahsoka.
Also coming in 2023 is Skeleton Crew, a coming-of-age story taking place in the same period as The Mandalorian. Finally, there is a series coming based on Lando Calrissian. There are also some animated Star Wars series coming to Disney+, including Tales of the Jedi.
