Mindy Kaling calls out former Today Show host

During the event, Mindy Kaling applauded Anne Hathaway for the way she handled her awkward interview with Matt Lauer in 2012. During her speech, The Mindy Project alum recalled a time when Anne Hathaway brushed off an inappropriate question from the former host. In the interview, Matt asked the Oscar winner about her “wardrobe malfunction” on the set of Les Miserables.

He called it a “wardrobe malfunction.” However, a photographer lowered his camera to the ground so he could take an upskirt photo. This question obviously made Anne very uncomfortable during the interview. Yet, she was able to steer the conversation in another direction.

Mindy Kaling mentioned that “from the age of 18 years old [Anne Hathaway] has been objectified regularly” and that “she fell in love” with the actress for how she managed the awkward question.

“On the Today Show… Matt Lauer said to her in this chastising, someone-has-been-naughty way, ‘Anne Hathaway I’ve seen a lot of you lately,'” Mindy Kaling explained. “First of all, gross. Are you a lame uncle at Thanksgiving? And then he asked her what’s the lesson learned from something like that, referring to the paparazzi ambushing her — as if she was the one who had done something wrong.”

During her speech, Mindy Kaling didn’t hold back on her feelings about the disgraced host. She called him out for making it seem as if Anne was acting inappropriately. The upskirt photo circulated online and in tabloids during the time of the interview. Anne said she felt violated during that time.

Matt Lauer’s inappropriate interview with Anne Hathaway

In that interview, Anne Hathaway had the perfect response to the television personality. She told him that she found it sad that people want to discuss the upskirt photo that was taken without her consent rather than her acting career.

“It kind of made me sad on two accounts. One that we live in an age when someone takes a picture of someone in a vulnerable moment and rather delete it and do the decent thing sells it,” Anne explained. “And I’m sorry that we live in a culture that commodified [the] sexuality of unwilling participants.”

Meanwhile, Mindy Kaling is producing the HBO Max adult Scooby-Doo series that centers around Velma. The entire gang returns, including Daphne, Fredd, Shaggy, Velma, and Scooby, who solve mysteries with their van called the Mystery Machine.
