‘DWTS’: Shangela Proves Her Resilience & Strength
Shangela is definitely one of the toughest contestants on Dancing With The Stars this season. Being a touring drag performer takes a lot of skill and precision. But it also takes a lot of resilience. Monday night was “Most Memorable Year Night” and Shangela revealed her year was 2013. She admitted she snapped her leg performing a death drop that year. Her medical team told her that she may never dance again, which broke her heart.
However, Shangela wasn’t about to let her accident stop her. She went through surgeries and rehab in an attempt to build her strength back up. Her own mother was her biggest cheerleader and support system during the process. As viewers can clearly see, Shangela definitely made it back to the dance floor.
Shangela credits her fierceness to her recovery process
Shangela opted to dedicate her emotional performance to her mother, who managed to come see the show live this week. Health complications prevented her from being in the ballroom before this week.
Shangela and her partner Gleb Savchenko performed the Foxtrot to “Roar” by Katy Perry and earned a 32 out of 40 from the judges. Viewers at home really seemed to connect with the message and performance overall.
“I don’t have to make myself any more palatable to mid-America, I just have to show up as who I am,” the drag performer told EW after the show ended. “You’re going to love me or you’re not going to love me, but you’re going to experience me. Hopefully we’ll open your mind. We’re not as scary as an idea that you may have in your head and can be very lovable and entertaining.”
So far, Shangela and Gleb have been in the middle of the pack. They’re far from the bottom of the leaderboard, but the ballroom is getting more competitive each week. Do they have what it takes to make it through to Michael Buble Night?
Tonight is Prom Night. Shangela and Gleb will perform the Cha Cha to “Waiting for Tonight” by Jennifer Lopez. Will this be the night that Shangela and Gleb pull ahead in the leaderboard? Be sure to tune in and see what happens next. You really won’t want to miss out.
The drag performer asserts her dominance in the ballroom
Shangela may be hilarious and charming, but she also means business. DWTS host Alfonso Ribeiro kept calling her “Angela” by accident and she corrected him after having enough.
“The real question: Did you learn my name?” Shangela asked during Disney+ Night.
“Listen, I wanted to say, the last couple of weeks, I did actually say your name a couple of times wrong. I did say ‘Angela,’ which is my wife’s name, so it was a term of endearment. You know what I’m saying?” Alfonso replied.
“You know I love you baby,” Shangela joked. “And you are my Alfondo.”
