‘Today’: Matt Lauer Left Huge Mess Behind Hoda & Savannah
Matt Lauer left a huge mess behind Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie. Today Show fans are finally learning what happened behind the scenes. In 2017, claims about Matt’s inappropriate behavior came to light. As a result, NBC fired him from his position.
Matt co-hosted the Today Show with Savannah Guthrie. He was replaced by Hoda Kotb, which was a first for the network. At the time, the talk show mainly featured older male anchors with younger female co-anchors. Hoda called out the show for its sexism on the set.
Now, sources close to the show are sharing what went down after Matt’s firing. Savannah and Hoda were “handed a mess” as they “changed the culture” of the show.
Hoda Kotb & Savannah Guthrie speak out
The ladies took over the morning show from the disgraced Matt Lauer. Having both women as the face of Today “changed the culture” of the show. Both of them landed on Forbes’ list of 200 “50 Over 50” women.
Sources close to the set of the Today Show revealed to The U.S. Sun what happened in the hours following Matt Lauer’s firing. It came at the peak of the MeToo movement. Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie had to deal with the mess that their anchor left behind. They also had to address the issues of inappropriate behavior and workplace culture.
“They had to navigate an incomprehensible situation, not only for themselves, but for the audience, and most importantly for the Today Show staff, who were left reeling. And they had to do it on live television,” the source told The Sun.
That incident led Hoda Kotb and Savannah to form a close bond. The source admits that they “were handed a mess when Matt Lauer was fired.” During that time, they leaned on each other for support. They knew they had to change the workplace situation.
Did Matt Lauer lead the men’s club on Today Show?
Long before Matt Lauer was ousted, the insider explained that the Today Show “felt like a boys club.” Some of the female co-anchors competed against one another for the same job. Former co-hosts Katie Couric and Ann Curry “couldn’t stand each other,” claims the insider. It created a hostile environment.
Thankfully, the Today Show has changed from its heyday. Savannah and Hoda Kotb had to change that environment starting with their own work relationship. This allowed more opportunities for women and a stronger camaraderie between the two. The mean girl’s environment suddenly disappeared.
“They set the tone each day, and they lead by example,” the source continued. “That leadership, from two strong, supportive women, changed the culture.”
Savannah and Hoda Kotb share something in common. They focus on their respective families. The co-anchors previously revealed that they join each other in FaceTiming their kids in between commercial breaks. It’s one of the routines that brought them together.
