‘Fox News’ Martha MacCallum Makes Blunder About Puerto Rico
Fox News reporter Martha MacCallum made a blunder when she covered Hurricane Ian, which touched down on the west coast of Florida on Wednesday, September 28. She didn’t know that Puerto Rico is part of the U.S. The island went through its devastation by Hurricane Fiona last week.
The anchor was confused when she mentioned the latest natural disaster and where it hit. During Wednesday’s broadcast, MacCallum and her co-anchors discussed Hurricane Ian’s impact on the sunshine state. The Category 4 storm had sustained winds of around 150 mph as it hit the southwest coast.
Find out what happened next when Martha MacCallum made a major mistake during the Hurricane Ian coverage.
Martha MacCallum makes an embarrassing blunder
The Fox News correspondent mentioned Hurricane Ian’s impact on Cuba. She compared it to Hurricane Fiona’s impact on Puerto Rico earlier this month. Martha MacCallum was happy that the U.S. had “better infrastructure.” Little did she know, Puerto Rico is part of the United States.
“You know you feel terrible for people in Puerto Rico who were just hit, in Cuba who were just hit,” Martha MacCallum said. “Thank God we have better infrastructure in our country.”
During the broadcast, Fox News viewers took to Twitter to call her out for the mistake. Not only did they inform her that Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, but they also called her out for mentioning America’s infrastructure. Some said that it wouldn’t even survive massive hurricanes like Fiona and Ian.
- “Does she know?”
- “I don’t know what kind of infrastructure survives 155+ mph winds and rains.”
- “‘In OUR country…’ Puerto Rico has been a U.S. territory since 1898. Who wants to tell her?”
- “Puerto Rico is our country & there’s few areas in the continental US that aren’t one severe weather event away from looking like The Walking Dead. “
- “Also the difference between the islands and the continental US? Key West has fine infrastructure, but would get destroyed by a direct hit from a major storm just like Cuba and Puerto Rico.”
Fox News beats out MSBNC in viewers
Martha MacCallum never mentioned if she learned that Puerto is a U.S. territory. She appeared to have moved on from that embarrassing segment. Regardless, MacCallum has something to celebrate. Per Fox 22 WFVX Bangor, Fox News beat out MSBNC in viewers.
The cable news network finished the third quarter of 2022 as the most-watched network among total and primetime viewers. It beat out both CNN and MSNBC, which rounded out the top five cable news networks. Fox News garnered 2.2 million viewers during the primetime hours of 8-11 p.m.
Some of the most-watched shows include Martha MacCallum’s The Story, Fox & Friends, and FOX News @ Night. They’ve attracted more viewers than CNN and MSNBC. Nielsen Media Research reported this data.
