Meghan McCain Reveals How Toxic Co-Host Joy Behar Really Was

Meghan McCain often had conflicting opinions with her co-hosts on The View. It was okay, though because that was what the talk show is about. Women with conflicting opinions and world views. However, it appears that original co-host Joy Behar may have made for an uncomfortable work environment. At least that is what former co-host McCain is alleging.

Meghan McCain: This Is Her Point Of View

In 2017, Meghan McCain officially joined the popular ABC talk show as a co-host. She was deemed the one with the Conservative point of view and definitely had the experience. Her father was John McCain, who had run for President but was also an Arizona Senator. He was well-respected by both parties so it seemed she could bring a lot to the table. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it was actually Whoopi Goldberg who had encouraged Meghan to hop on board. She had already had commentator experience, previously working at FOX News but left to join The View.

Whoopi even reassured her family that she would be protected. “We got her. … She’s in good hands here.” However, that was not always the case. There had been women with strong Conservative political beliefs previously on the show. Elisabeth Hasselback was staunch on her stances but, again, it was the diverse opinions that has kept the show alive. One person that McCain knew she would clash with from the get go was Joy Behar. Yet, she was excited for what was to come. That is until one move by Behar pushed the co-host over the edge.

Putting Her Foot Down

Meghan McCain put up with a lot. As someone who stood by her beliefs, she rarely backed down. Then, she had a miscarriage which rocked her world. According to The Sun, Joy Behar was not particularly sensitive with her comments towards the grieving mother. As aforementioned, when Meghan joined the The View, she knew she would have some issues with Joy, in particular. However, she remained optimistic: “I don’t think we’re going to agree on anything, Joy, but I’m really excited.”

Then, in September of 2020, Meghan welcomed her rainbow baby, Liberty. She was on maternity leave but when she came back, Joy made some comments that pushed the new mother to her breaking point. “I finally went back to the show, and the day I went back to the show, Joy Behar said on air, ‘Nobody missed you, we didn’t miss you, you shouldn’t have come back.’ And I just… I started hysterically crying. Sorry gentlemen, I know, I started lactating on air and I started crying.”

Meghan admits that she never felt like she had any support through her pregnancy and thereafter. She has since been very verbal about what she experienced and admits that it was very “toxic.” There is a new Conservative host and Meghan McCain is hopeful the cycle has been broken. Only time will tell what happens next.
