‘DWTS’ Season 30 Champion Iman Shumpert Arrested In Dallas

Dancing With The Stars reigning champion Iman Shumpert found himself in some hot water this past week. The NBA star was trying to fly back to Los Angeles to see his family when TSA found what they believed to be marijuana. When questioned about it, Shumpert confirmed that it was.

Now, the DWTS champ is facing some pretty serious charges if he’s convicted.

Authorities apprehend Iman Shumpert in Dallas

According to TMZ Sports, 32-year-old Iman Shumpert was at the DFW airport in Dallas, Texas when the incident occurred. The official police report says that TSA screeners found a plastic bag containing the “green leafy substance” in the NBA star’s bag. He appeared cooperative and confirmed to the screeners that it was indeed marijuana.

When authorities arrived, they tested the substance and confirmed that the substance was marijuana. They also weighed the bag and found that it weighed 6.12 ounces.

TMZ also reports that Shumpert expressed concern about missing his flight because he was supposed to be visiting his daughter. However, authorities informed him that he would have to miss his flight because they were placing him under arrest for possession.  The police reports says that authorities placed Shumpert in handcuffs and took him to the airport jail “without incident.”

Although attitudes toward marijuana are changing in the country, it’s still illegal in many states — including Texas. The amount of marijuana that Iman Shumpert had in his bag qualified him for a “state jail felony.” In other words, if the NBA player is convicted of the crime, he could be facing up to two years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

The NBA star won the competition against all odds

During Dancing With The Stars Season 30, Iman Shumpert and his partner Daniella Karagach were the underdogs from the beginning. NBA players typically don’t do well on the show due to their size, but Shumpert picked up the choreography quickly. His Contemporary Halloween routine with Daniella quickly established the pair as a powerful force in the competition.

Many believed that JoJo Siwa and Jenna Johnson would win last year, but Iman and Daniella came out from behind to win it all. Viewers were thrilled that an NBA star with no formal dance training dominated the competition. After winning, Iman even went on to join the DWTS winter tour for select dates.

Shumpert is married to singer Teyana Taylor. They have two children together and live in Los Angeles. He and Daniella Karagach remain great friends to this day.
