Joy Behar divulges Whoopi Goldberg’s legal name on The View.

On Monday, August 1, Kal Penn made an appearance on the show. As Whoopi and Joy chatted with him, they learned how he came up with his stage name. He ran through the full story and that’s when Joy divulged Whoopi’s name.

He revealed that his legal name is Kalpen Modi. When he was in college, he was trying to decide on a stage name and had a couple of options, including “Kal-pachino,” which his friends suggested.

Ultimately, he chose to chop his first name into two to create a stage name.

On The View, Kal noted that he never changed his name legally. His friends actually referred to Whoopi when chatting about stage names. On the show, he said, “You know Whoopi Goldberg’s real name is Caryn. I’m like ‘it is?'”

Because they were on the topic of stage names and specifically talking about Whoopi, Joy cut in. She confirmed her first name is correct and revealed Whoopi’s legal last name, too. She said, “Caryn Johnson. Caryn Johnson.”

Where did the name Whoopi Goldberg come from?

As a comedian, Whoopi decided to have a little bit of fun when crafting her stage name. She intended to make part of her name funny while keeping the other half serious. So, she borrowed the last name Goldberg from her grandma.

Back in 2006, the comedian told the New York Times the story behind her stage name. She said, If you get a little gassy, you’ve got to let it go. So people used to say to me, ‘You’re like a whoopee cushion.’ And that’s where the name came from.”

  1. We already knew her name was Caryn. Whoopie hates that they named the rude, fighting, videos being called Karens. If people really thought her mother named her Whoopie then you have the problem. Seems its bash Joy this week.

  2. Don’t ever take The View off the air. I watch it everyday and always will. I love hearing all of their opinions. I’ve learned a lot from this show.

    1. Not a very good way to educate oneself. Maybe better to self educate yourself through other means, to enhance critical thinking and draw your own insights.

  3. What is the big deal? Whoopi’s legal name has never been a secret. It has been known almost since her beginnings in 80’s.
As for the Whoopi haters. If don’t like her you’re free to change the channel. She is not going anywhere until she is ready to move on. She was hired to do what she does.

  4. I love watching the view and who cares what her government name is and it’s always on the net if anyone wants to know, and Joy makes us all watch even more in fact they are all wonderful. I have to always watch the view. Never take it off😊

  5. I have been personally hoping for many years that both Whoopi and Joy would be cut from the show as they have both made inappropriate comments on the show. it was because of the that I decided to quit watching the show after Barbara Waters and my other face left the show. As an enlightened female I found quite a few of their comments disgusting and inappropriate.
