‘Stranger Things’ Almost Didn’t Cast Sadie Sink — Why?
Stranger Things fans have a tough time imagining the series as they know it without Sadie Sink as Max Mayfield. However, the casting department didn’t think Sink was right for the role at first and almost went in an entirely different direction.
But through some clever thinking on her part, Sadie Sink was able to prove herself and secure the role. Keep reading to find out what exactly went down.
Sadie Sink almost didn’t get the part of Max Mayfield
Stranger Things fans were generally impressed with Season 4, which premiered this summer. Sadie Sink got a little more screentime this year as Max Mayfield’s role was expanded.
But what would the show even look like if the casting crew didn’t select Sadie Sink to play Max?
According to Sink, that’s what almost happened. The truth is that Sink is actually significantly older than her character. As of Season 4, Max is about 15 years old while Sadie Sink is 20 in real life. The casting team was worried that the actress was just simply too old to play Max.
In an interview with Fashion, the actress recalled how she refused to take “no” for an answer.
“I just begged and pleaded with them to give me more material so I could show them something fresh,” she revealed, saying that the role of Max felt “just right” for her. Afterward, the producers called her back for a script read with Gaten Matarazzo and Caleb McLaughlin. The next day, production called and told Sink she would play Max.
And the rest is history. There will be some spoilers from Season 4 below, so continue at your own risk!
What does Season 5 have in store for the actress?
When Stranger Things last left Max Mayfield, she was actually killed by Vecna but revived by Eleven at the last minute. But she still sustained quite a bit of damage to her body. In Max’s last scene, viewers see her in a hospital bed with Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin) faithfully by her side. The stick figure drawing Max gave him is up on her hospital room wall.
Fans have absolutely no idea whether or not Max will wake up in Season 5, but they certainly are holding out hope. The Duffer brothers did confirm that Season 5 will be the last chapter for Stranger Things. It’s one of the most popular series on Netflix, but all good things must come to an end at some point.
