Discovery Channel Kicks Off Shark Week: How To Watch
Discovery Channel is kicking off Shark Week this very week. This annual event has become one of the most-televised moments. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is the man behind the promo for Shark Week 2022 Live.
The network’s schedule is packed with all kinds of goodies for Shark Week fans. Even the Impractical Jokers will bring some comic relief to the educational broadcast. Shark Week is the longest-running annual cable tradition in history. For some reason, it continues to draw fans.
What is Shark Week?
This annual week-long television programming block takes place on the Discovery Channel. It features shark-oriented programming. Shark Week is returning for its 34th season. It first premiered on July 17, 1988, and the moment has never let up.
Shark Week typically takes place during July or August of the summer season. It was originally created to promote conservation efforts and educate people about these scary-looking fish. There are many misconceptions involved with sharks, and this programming aims to end that.
Shark Week exploded in popularity and became a hit on the Discovery Channel. Ever since renewed interest took place in 2010, it became the longest-running cable event in television history. Shark Week broadcasts in over 72 countries. The network heavily promotes it on broadcast and social media.
How did Shark Week happen?
The idea for Shark Week came about on a napkin at a bar. True story. Executives Clark Bunting, John Hendricks, and Steve Cheskin came up with an idea for Discovery Channel. They brought it up to Executive Producer Brooke Runnette, who talked about it on The Atlantic.
“And one of them said something like, ‘You know what would be awesome? Shark Week!'” Runette said. “And somebody in that nexus scribbled it down on a napkin. You know how it is. An idea comes in a bar comes from many fathers.”
