Tekken is one of the most popular franchises in video gaming history. It has been a series of fighting games with one of the best continuous stories since the release of the first game back in 1994. Flash forward to 2022 and there are seven main series games. And Tekken is one of the best-selling video game franchises of all time with 53.5 million units sold overall. So it’s no surprise that we’re finally getting some kind of adaptation of the story after all this time. The name is Tekken: Bloodline, and it’s an anime coming very soon to Netflix.
Tekken: Bloodline
The trailer came out on YouTube very recently. Surprisingly close to the show’s August 18th release date. It shows a number of iconic fighters from throughout the Tekken series. The first season will loosely adapt the story of Tekken 3. Tekken 3 is the beginning of the modern Tekken storyline following Jin Kazama and is still thought of as the best game in the franchise by many fans to this day.
In the trailer, we can see, alongside the main protagonist Jin Kazama, characters like King, Ogre, Leroy Smith, Paul Phoenix, and Heihachi Mishima. We also see Jin’s parents, Jun and Kazuya, the main character of the first two games in the series. Overall it seems like the series has a lot of promise and dedication to the amazing source material. It promises amazing action scenes and a closer look at some of the best characters in the Tekken franchise.
If Season 1 is successful enough, we may see the series begin to follow the story through games 4 through 7. Or maybe it will branch down an entirely separate path. The studio developing Tekken: Bloodline is Barnstorm Design Labo. And the director is Yoshikazu Miyao. The entire production team doesn’t have many notable credits at the moment. Which could mean anything for the series. Maybe it’s a promising beginning for up-and-coming creators, or a disaster waiting to happen. Hopefully, it’s the former, and Tekken fans will have a series to rally around.
Fighting Game Anime
While many fighting games tend to have long, winding stories that weave through the many entries, they don’t tend to get many adaptations for those stories. Mortal Kombat is the fighting franchise with the most adaptations. There are several Mortal Kombat films, the most recent of which came out just last year. Tekken: Bloodline could potentially open door to a number of other fighting franchises getting anime adaptations. Certainly, fans would like to see the stories for games like Street Fighter and Guilty Gear get their own anime.
Tekken: Bloodline is coming to Netflix worldwide on August 18th.
