Dungeons & Dragons is the most famous and most popular tabletop roleplaying game of all time. The game has become synonymous with the basement-dwelling nerd archetype. As time has gone on, however, the stereotypes put with the game have broken down. More and more, we’ve seen big celebrities like Vin Diesel and Henry Cavill confess their love for the timeless game. Breaking the mold for who is thought to play the game, and opening up the audience to a legion of new players. Now, there’s a Dungeons & Dragons film adaptation heading to the big screen. The name is Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, and the trailer just came out.
Honor Among Thieves
The trailer came out just yesterday as a part of the legion of new announcements coming with Comic-Con 2022. It highlights a number of Dungeons & Dragons tropes that are sure to excite fans of the game. Owlbears, thieves, and bards, alongside infamous hazards like the mimic chest and gelatinous cubes. Plus, a decent number of dragons, of course.
More so, the cast has no shortage of star power. The questing party consists of names like Chris Pine (Star Trek, Wonder Woman), Michelle Rodriguez (Fast & Furious, Lost), Justice Smith (Detective Pikachu, The Get Down), and more. Furthermore, legendary actor Hugh Grant is also playing the primary antagonist of the film. At San Diego Comic-Con, he confessed himself to be an “enthusiastic Dungeon Master”. Many of the main cast, alongside the director and writers of the film, made an appearance for a panel at Comic-Con. Similarly, they all seem to have a lot of excitement about the film. Many note that it’s got a good mixture of stakes, humor, and a level of attention and love that could only be put in by fellow D&D fans.
The writers and directors of the film have a good track record within the comedy world. John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein have writing credits on both Horrible Bosses films, along with Spiderman: Homecoming and Game Night.
The Future Of Dungeons And Dragons
Dungeons & Dragons has historically not been great about its adaptations outside of the tabletop medium. There was a trio of films in the early 2000s, only one of which had a theatrical release. The original films had big names like Marlon Wayans and Jeremy Irons. Still, it was hated by critics and fans alike. The movies were brought up at the recent Comic-Con panel for Honor Among Thieves, and the creators seem intent on making their film leagues better than the ones that came before. Hopefully, D&D fans will get just that.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is premiering on March 3rd, 2023.
