It’s rare that a Western 2D animation gets as popular as the original Castlevania series did. The show came to Netflix originally back in 2017 and was immediately a hit. Not only was the Castlevania fanbase happy to get any kind of new content. But the show brought legions of new fans into the legacy game franchise, as well. The show’s combination of bleak, powerful storytelling and fantastically gory action was the perfect combination.

We thought it was all over after Season 4. But it turns out that is not the case. There’s a new Castlevania series on the horizon. And it promises to adapt one of the most popular games the franchise has ever seen.

Castlevania: Nocturne

Castlevania: Nocturne is the name of the new show. The teaser trailer came out on Youtube and other social media platforms recently. The exciting part for many longtime fans of the franchise is the character the series will focus on. Richter Belmont. Richter Belmont is a descendant of Simon and Sypha from the original series. Richter isn’t a grandson or even great-grandson, though. He’s a descendant from many, many generations in the future. Where the original Castlevania takes place in the 1450s, Nocturne will take place during the French Revolution. That’s well over three centuries later.

The series is being done by the same animation studio as the previous series Powerhouse Animation. That guarantees this show will have a similar level of quality, which is very exciting. The only concerning piece of news is that the original show’s creator and writer, Warren Ellis, will not be returning. Ellis is one of the most successful comic book authors of all time. That amazing success writing for books like X-Men and Iron Man was perfect for Castlevania.

This new series has Kevin Kolde as the showrunner. Kolde was a developer on the previous series, so that’s good news. But the lead writer is Clive Bradley, somebody who did not work on the old series. So only time will tell if this fresh blood will add interesting new elements to the world or have it come up short.

A Dormant Game Franchise

Castlevania as a game franchise has been dead in the water for some time. All of the classic games the show draws on for inspiration came out in the 80s or 90s. The 21st century has seen the franchise slow to a complete halt. This is part of the reason fans are so happy to see so much coming out of these shows. It’s rare that video game adaptations are made to this level of quality. And when there’s nothing coming out on the video game end, they’ll take what they can get.

Castlevania: Nocturne has no official release window as of right now. But we can hope to see the show hit Netflix sometime in 2023. 2024 at the latest.
