Hulu’s ‘Candy’ Preview Shows Star Jessica Biel Is Not So Sweet
Familiarity breeds contempt and murder for Jessica Biel’s character starring in Hulu’s Candy, where Biel is physically transformed and plays the title character who is, by all accounts, a goody-two-shoes helping everyone out volunteering non-stop at church and school.
The trouble is, Candy Montgomery is a cryptic headcase ready to explode. This 1980 housewife and mother seemed to have everything right—a sweet and loving husband, two kids, a well-kept house—but not all was perfect.
The veneer cracks and the deadly sin of lust overtake Candy as her good friend Betty Gore’s (Melanie Lynskey) husband is the apple she bites into, and the subsequent murder of Betty leaves a stunned community. Who could have whacked Betty to death with an ax?
Candy shows a not-so-sweet reality.
In the spirit of a soap opera that veers into true crime territory, this tale of Candy is all based on real events.
Candy appears to crack from the pressure of conformity. A strange persona builds within her. Her actions are foreign to anyone looking at the surface of this community of soccer moms, church ladies, and status quo families who pay taxes, landscape their lawns, and tithe weekly at church.
The preview below shows how Betty befriends Candy and then finds she has given Candy access to her family and an opportunity to act out a carnal desire that ultimately will lead to her demise.
Betty Gore’s murder in Texas
Candy is based on the real-life events that occurred in the suburbs of Dallas, Texas, back on Friday [June] the 13th in 1980.
According to Texas Monthly, the crime was a head-scratcher for law enforcement:
The police who investigated Betty Gore’s death at first could not believe that anyone as small as Candy Montgomery had the physical strength to wield that ax so brutally.
Their church connection allowed Candy Montgomery and Betty Gore to first come together as friends, and then when the truth emerged, hatred and murder followed quickly.
