‘Survivor’ 42: Marya Shares About The One Thing She Couldn’t Let Go

SPOILERS FOR SURVIVOR SEASON 42 EPISODE 2:
Survivor Season 42 is doing a great job giving all of its players very even edits. 2 episodes in, it feels like everyone has had a chance to shine. We’re getting to see relationships develop and personalities come out in a way that some seasons can neglect. With that being said, Marya is one of the smaller players thus far. She was fairly invisible in the first episode. And in the second episode, she got a moment to tell her story right before being sent home.
It’s a shame that she didn’t get to stick around for us to see more of her. But what we did see was very emotionally impactful. And after Episode 2 went live, there was a question immediately running through every fan’s mind. A question about a sentimental trinket Marya brought to Fiji with her.
Marya & The Necklace
Marya’s big emotional moment from Episode 2 is her talking about her brother. Marya’s brother was the first healthcare worker to die of COVID-19 in the United States. Season 42 is one of the first Survivor seasons from this “post-COVID” era. So Marya’s presence and story are sobering reminders to the viewer on the conditions surrounding this season.
Marya told her tribe about a mission she has on Survivor outside of winning. She sought closure from her brother’s death. Marya wears a necklace with her brother’s image on it. She told her tribe in Episode 2 that she plans to bury the necklace somewhere on the island when she finally found that closure. Considering she got the boot not long after that confession, she didn’t have a chance to bury it on her tribe’s beach. So does she still have the necklace?
The answer is yes. On Marya’s exit interview with Rob Has A Podcast, she reveals that she still wears the necklace to this day.
“Somewhere in the process, I knew I wasn’t supposed to leave him there. It just wasn’t the right time or the space,” Marya said.
Marya went on Survivor to get closure on her brother. Closure doesn’t always mean letting go. Maybe Marya will bury the necklace somewhere someday. Or maybe she’s realized that keeping her brother close to her at all times means he never really left her.
‘Survivor’ 42 Continues
We’re still early into Season 42, but things have been more than emotional enough already. From Marya’s journey with her necklace to Maryanne’s heartbreaking crush gone wrong. The foot has been firmly on the gas pedal for this season since day 1. Hopefully, it stays that way because this is potentially shaping up to be one of the best seasons of the show in a long time.
