Alum calls out franchise for lack of mental health support
When Colton Underwood announced he was gay on Good Morning America in 2021, he confessed to having suicidal thoughts before coming out.
In recent months, Underwood has distanced himself from the Bachelor Nation franchise. In a new podcast interview, he went as far as calling out the lack of mental health support for contestants and leads. What happened?
Colton spoke with Us Weekly ahead of the premiere of his new reality show. He will be among the celebrities competing on the CBS show Beyond The Edge.
The former Bachelor said that he was “grateful” for his experience on the dating competition. However, in his opinion, the network should focus on the mental health of former contestants and leads.
He calls the popular alums the franchise’s “money makers.”
“They benefit greatly off of our faces, off of our likeness [and] off of our stories. The only thing that they can do better is to follow up and make sure that you are mentally OK before they make decisions to make better TV over your mental health.” – Colton Underwood, Us Weekly.
He made similar comments during a recent appearance on Bravo’s Watch What Happens Live.

Despite coming out less than a year ago, Colton Underwood has found his forever person. In February of 2022, he announced his engagement to political strategist Jordan C. Brown.
However, he isn’t rushing to the altar. Underwood previously said that the two are planning a “big” wedding that may not happen immediately due to the coronavirus pandemic. The pandemic caused a backlog of weddings after many couples had to postpone in both 2020 and 2021.
So, it may be a long engagement for the duo. In the meantime, the Bachelor alum is looking ahead to the future. Does Colton Underwood want kids with his fiance?
Yes, definitely. In fact, he said on the Almost Famous podcast earlier this week that they are already exploring options.
Underwood told hosts Ben Higgins and Ashley Iaconetti that they are “thinking surrogate”
During his GMA interview in 2021, Colton Underwood said he didn’t know gay couples could have children. In fact, he admits that he didn’t know “all the steps,” but he’s “really, really, excited” about it, according to Us Weekly.
