Dancing With The Stars fans will be relieved to know that Maks Chmerkovskiy is safely back in Los Angeles. The Ukrainian dancer was in his native country for work projects when the Russian invasion happened. Since then, he’s been trying to safely escape.

The 42-year-old kept fans, friends, and family members updated on his Instagram channel throughout the frightening week. But now, there’s definitely happy news to share.

Reporters from ET asked for a comment from the dancer.

“I just don’t want to resent peace somewhere else because of what I just saw, that’s the reality. I don’t know really what to say right this second,” he admitted.

Shortly after, he addressed the crowd of photographers and journalists that showed up to speak with him.

“The reason why Ukraine is standing right now is because of the Ukrainian people,” Maks told the crowd, saying that many saw the invasion coming years in advance. “And the fact that the entire world is helping.”

“Huge shout out to Poland, huge shout out to neighboring countries,” the former DWTS pro added. “The way I was treated through the whole process of leaving into Poland, I’ve just got to bow down to the Polish people.”

However, Maks also knows that the danger is far from over.

“If we don’t get involved, this thing is going to go everywhere else. I think that in 2022, following this action, we have to completely rethink the way we do things as a planet. There can never again be one person who can do something like this ever again. We have to have checks and balances globally, not just one country at a time,” he concluded.

The dancer risked everything to make it across the Polish border to safety

While Maks Chmerkovskiy was still trapped in Ukraine, he said he was arrested at one point while trying to escape. He didn’t provide many details at the time, citing that he was still trying to “unpack” everything.

“I made it on the train,” Maks announced to fans once he started to leave, as reported by Variety. “We’re heading to Warsaw, hopefully. Train to Lviv was not an option. The situation at the train station is insane. At first it feels manageable but it gets a lot worse when it comes time to actually board the train. Long story but all I can say now is that I’m a big man with nothing but a backpack and it’s traumatizing.”

He briefly described some of the horrible things he saw on his journey on his Instagram stories, including a little boy who didn’t want to leave his dad behind.
