Maks Chmerkovskiy finally makes it out of Ukraine after a harrowing journey
It’s been a grueling week for Maks Chmerkovskiy. He was in Ukraine working on World Of Dance when the Russian invasion happened. It’s been a very chaotic, intense situation, but he’s finally out of the country.
Throughout his journey for survival, he’s been updating everyone on his Instagram page.
“I made it on the train,” the 42-year-old dancer announced to fans, as reported by Variety. “We’re heading to Warsaw, hopefully. Train to Lviv was not an option. The situation at the train station is insane. At first it feels manageable but it gets a lot worse when it comes time to actually board the train. Long story but all I can say now is that I’m a big man with nothing but a backpack and it’s traumatizing.”
“Currently, I’m in a cabin with four adults and 7 kids (ages 2-11) which usually is only occupied by a maximum of three people,” Maks continued. “There’s usually up to 30 people in this particular wagon. We were told we have to fit 135. Walkways are packed. People everywhere. It’s sweaty and claustrophobic.”
In the past 24 hours, Maks has also detailed some of the horrible things he saw during his escape.
“What finally broke me is when I was watching an eight-ish year old boy hysterically crying and not wanting to let go of his father,” he said. “Verbatim: ‘If you stay, I want to stay too because if they kill you I won’t sleep.’”
Maks is a father of a five-year-old son so that couldn’t have been easy for him to see. But thankfully, he will be back in the United States before long.
The rest of the family eagerly awaits the dancer’s return
Fans already know that Maks Chmerkovskiy hasn’t had an easy time since the Russian invasion began. He was even arrested at one point, according to his Instagram documentation. Maks didn’t provide many details of the arrest, citing that he wasn’t in the headspace to unpack everything at the moment.
Meanwhile, his family members continue to ask for prayers until Maks is back in California with his wife and son.
Back home, his wife Peta Murgatroyd said that she’s overwhelmed by the outpouring of kindness her family is receiving right now. Neighbors and friends she hasn’t spoken to in years have come out of the woodwork to say they’re thinking of the family and just want Maks to come home safely.
