Sword Art Online Season 4 dropped into the Netflix streaming library this month. After fans binged their way through all of the episodes, they were left with one big question: Is there any more of this series? Is all of SAO available on Netflix? Technically, the answer to this question is both “yes” and “no.”

Now, we know what you are thinking. Answering both yes and now to that simple question isn’t very helpful. That, however, doesn’t change the fact that the answer to the question is both yes and no. Keep reading and we’ll explain why the answer is so complicated.

Is there a Season 5 of SAO?

As we previously reported, the anime series has not been renewed for Season 5 just yet. That being said, Season 4 basically ended with a “to be continued” stamped across it promising the return of Season 5. So, fans are pretty hopeful there will be more of the series in the future. Sadly, there was a two-year gap between when Season 4 premiered in Japan and when it dropped into the Netflix streaming library. The gap was blamed on a combination of the pandemic and getting the Eng Dub version ready.

When (or even if) Sword Art Online Season 5 becomes available on Netflix largely depends on if the streaming library still has licensing rights to the series. Unfortunately, only time will tell.

So, is all of Sword Art Online on Netflix?

Technically, the entirety of the series (Season 1 through Season 4) is available on Netflix. That being said, there is a Sword Art Online movie that is not on Netflix. Technically there was a movie called Sword Art Online The Movie: Ordinal Scale that was released back in 2013. While you cannot stream the movie on Netflix, the movie is available in both Sub and Dub versions via Funimation. You will have to subscribe to Funimation to stream the two-hour movie.

The SAO movie features both main cast members Kirito and Asuna. As far as the timeline is concerned, the movie falls into the timeline just after Season 2. As a refresher, fans are encouraged to watch the SAO Season 2 Finale before watching the two-hour movie.

On Funimation, the Sword Art Online movie is labeled as “Season 5” causing some confusion for non-subscribers. In the description of the series, this labeling error has the series marked as having five seasons. The series, however, only has four seasons and a movie.

If you happen to be a gamer, however, there are also several SAO video games that have been released for fans to enjoy.

Have you had a chance to watch the Sword Art Online movie? Are you bummed to know you may be waiting a while for Season 5 of the series? Let us know your thoughts in the comments down below.
