Katie Maloney Explains Why She Decided On Abortion With Tom Schwartz

Katie Maloney says her decision to have an abortion was not a light one. The abortion story first came out at the start of Vanderpump Rules Season 9. During the two-part reunion special, Katie shared why she and her husband Tom Schwartz made that decision.

She admitted that it was not “an easy decision.” The couple just started dating at the time it happened. Schwartz and Katie both felt that it would ruin their relationship. They were already in a chaotic place and they didn’t want to bring a baby into the world. So, Katie and Schwartz had to come to terms with this shocking news.

Katie Maloney and Tom Schwartz “were a disaster”

Katie Maloney told host Andy Cohen that she felt she had to lay her story out there. The couple embarked on their fertility journey. In order to make that happen, they had to open up about their abortion. No one in the Pump Rules cast knew what the couple went through. Schwartz never even told his friend Tom Sandoval. During the VPR Season 9 reunion, Katie and Tom explained the reason to share their abortion story.

“When we were deciding to open up about our fertility and going to the fertility doctor, these were the kind of questions that we were going to come up with,” Katie Maloney said during the show. “When you talk about these things, it can feel isolating, and it can feel off-limits. I don’t think we should shy away from them.”

She added that she “wanted to follow my heart.” The “You’re Gonna Love Me” podcast host admitted that she “recently told” her family about it so they wouldn’t feel out of the loop. The reason why Katie didn’t tell them at the time is that she didn’t want anyone to change her mind. Schwartz said he “never told anyone” about their abortion.

“We were a disaster [back then]. Highs and lows but tomorrow was never promised at that point in our relationship,” Schwartz explained. “It was not a snap decision, and it wasn’t an easy decision, but it was our decision.”

The couple wants to start their family

Nowadays, Katie Maloney and Tom Schwartz are in a good enough place to start a family together. While sharing their journey on the show, they opened up about their past abortion. Katie admitted that their relationship “was not pretty” at the beginning. The couple would argue a lot, so she felt that he would leave her if she ever became pregnant. Katie says she wanted to make the right decision for them at the time.

“I think we would have broke[n] up and [been] like, ‘This is too much,'” Katie Maloney continued. “But we would have been good parents.”

Lisa Vanderpump assured them that they will be great parents. Katie has received a lot of support from fans for sharing her story. However, there have been naysayers. One person slammed her for making the decision. The online troll told her that she didn’t “deserve” to have a baby.
