‘Vanderpump Rules’: Katie Maloney Discusses Abortion, Fertility Issues

Vanderpump Rules star Katie Maloney explains why she wanted to share her abortion and fertility issues. Earlier on in Season 9, the cast member shared that she underwent an abortion in the early stages of her relationship with Tom Schwartz. In that episode, the couple went to the doctor to start their fertility journey. Katie admitted that her issues with fertility made it hard on her when her friends became pregnant.

Her former cast members Stassi Schroeder and Brittany Cartwright became first-time moms earlier this year. Lala Kent and Scheana Shay also joined them. With the onslaught of the Pump Rules baby boom, fans wondered if Katie was next. Schwartz and Katie are the only married couple in Season 9.

Katie Maloney revealed she had an abortion

On Vanderpump Rules Season 9, Katie Maloney opened up about the abortion she had early in her relationship with Tom Schwartz. The couple was only dating at the time and they didn’t see how serious things would get between them. In a previous episode, Katie visited a fertility clinic, and the registration form asked if she was pregnant before.

“I knew I wanted to have kids. But I just knew that was not the time in my life,” Katie Maloney explained in the Tuesday, October 26 episode. “And now, it’s something that we are ready for when it happens.”

Tom Schwartz felt comfortable with his wife sharing her story. He felt that it was “the best decision at the time.” Nowadays, the couple is married and wants to start a family together. When they first started dating, Schwartz felt “uncertain” about their future and Katie feared that he would “leave” her if she decided to keep the baby.

She also wasn’t sure if their relationship would survive if a baby entered the picture. He thinks they would’ve been good parents. Schwartz said that he would have “manned up and found a way to make it work” if that’s what she wanted. Katie and Schwartz married in August 2016 but did not legalize their union until July 2019.

Per E! Online, Katie Maloney explained her decision to share the story of her traumatic fall and abortion. According to her, it took a lot of thought and deliberation. Schwartz stood by her every second. The pair had to share this part of themselves with the fans.

“It’s something that I still am trying to unpack and understand,” Katie Maloney said on the Friday, November 26 episode of the podcast, Reality Life With Kate Casey. “The brain is very complicated…it’s very hard to understand how it works, and how trauma to the brain impacts…mood, personality, emotions. So it’s something that I’m just still trying to understand and navigate.”

The Bravo star did not choose to share her story “to gain story.” Rather, she wanted the viewers to understand her history, so they could “connect” with her more. While Katie was relieved to share that story, she wasn’t sure how the fans would react. Schwartz and Katie wanted to be open about their fertility journey right from the start.
