Aaron Carter Confirms He Broke Up Karina Smirnoff And Maks Chmerkovskiy
If you’re a seasoned Dancing With The Stars fan, you might remember one major romance between pro dancers. Karina Smirnoff and Maksim Chmerkovskiy are now on to bigger and better things, but they were once core parts of the competition. They fell in love and even had an engagement. However, that didn’t last.
Pop singer Aaron Carter says he’s the reason to blame for the breakup. So what allegedly happened?
A lot of bad blood bubbled between Karina Smirnoff and Maks Chmerkovskiy
Popstar Aaron Carter competed with Karina Smirnoff in DWTS Season 9. They finished in 5th place, but it was hard to deny their chemistry. In a podcast interview with Steve-O, Aaron Carter admits he broke up Karina and Maks.
“I stole Karina Smirnoff, my partner, from the other guy on the show, Maksim Chmerkovskiy. I basically stole her from him and then they broke off their engagement,” the singer said, adding that he and Karina didn’t work out either. According to Aaron, that was the reason they finished in 5th place instead of winning.
“Karina and I just didn’t click and we were about to win and she got mad at me because I basically didn’t want to be with her-with her and was like stomping my feet on purpose during live performances, with those heels and all,” Aaron continued. “She would knee me in the balls real quick [when we were dancing] just ’cause she didn’t want to be on [the show] anymore with me and she was mad and she’s Russian.”
PEOPLE reported on the situation at the time and snagged an interview with Maks.
“I feel completely betrayed. I’m done,” Maks said at the time. “I don’t want to get into the specifics. Let’s just leave it at I’m done.”
Many fans wondered what exactly caused the split. Now it seems we have concrete answers.
What are the former couple up to these days?
Things didn’t end well between Karina and Maks, but it seems like they’ve both moved on and are living their best lives.
Maks Chmerkovskiy is married to his DWTS castmate Peta Murgatroyd and they have a little boy named Shai. Maks also had the opportunity to be a judge on the Ukrainian version of Dancing With The Stars this year, which he loved doing.
Karina is the mother of a little boy and hasn’t given any public information about his father. These days, she really enjoys acting. She stars in a new holiday film called Tango Shalom. She expressed interest in returning to Dancing With The Stars someday as a judge but admits her days as a pro are probably over.
