Singer talks about eating disorder in new documentary

According to her interview with Variety, Taylor Swift talks about the negative body image issues she’s struggled with. She revealed that some of the negative comments about her body led her to disordered eating. Swift will address her eating disorder on her Netflix documentary Miss Americana, which will drop on Jan. 31.

“And my relationship with food was exactly the same psychology that I applied to everything else in my life: If I was given a pat on the head, I registered as good,” Swift said. “If I was given a punishment, I registered that as bad.”

Swift recalled the first time she appeared on the cover of a tabloid. She was only 18 years old when she saw the headline: “Pregnant at 18?” Swift saw that as negative and tried to make herself as small as possible. She was at her thinnest at the height of her 1989 album era, the same time when she was photographed with her supermodel squad.

According to Healthline, eating disorders aren’t just common among thin women. You don’t even have to be thin to have an eating disorder or disordered eating. Eating disorders affect all kinds of genders, races, and sizes. It affects men just as much as it affects women. The National Eating Disorder Association (NEDA) reported that 30 million Americans have suffered from an eating disorder at one point during their lives. But when a big celebrity like Swift brings body shaming, eating disorders, and self-image issues to the forefront, it can give others the message that they can overcome it.

Taylor Swift still struggles with perfectionism

As The Irish Times reports, Swift doesn’t just recover from an eating disorder. She also recovers from perfectionism. The singer is always expected to look perfect. Just look at some of her paparazzi shots and you’ll see the singer wearing her signature red lipstick, straight blonde hair, and trend-worthy outfit. Swift became a perfectionist as a result.

In her struggle with perfection, she assumed it was normal to pass out on stage from extreme hunger. Swift’s battle with her eating disorder and perfectionism is a lifelong battle. So, she’s made some changes in her life. She now lives a quiet life in London with boyfriend Joe Alwyn.

She cut most of her supermodel friends out of her life. Swift no longer does paparazzi shoots. Instead, she is raw, real, and candid, as seen on Miss Americana. Fans rarely see this side of her. But there are moments when she becomes Taylor Swift the superstar rather than Taylor Swift the person.

Did Taylor Swift get engaged?
