‘Love on the Spectrum’: Netflix’s New Dating Show Tackles How People With Autism Navigate Love and Relationships
There’s a new dating show in town and it’s like nothing you’ve ever seen before. Forget the made-up drama of The Bachelor. Netflix’s newest foray takes viewers inside the world of dating for people with autism.
People with Autism Are Still a Rarity on Television in 2020
Autism is a very common developmental disorder that affects millions of people. Yet, it’s still widely misunderstood by the general public. Television shows are slowly introducing characters with autism into their shows. ABC’s The Good Doctor even features a main character with autism. However, the actor is not on the autism spectrum.
Freeform’s Everything’s Gonna Be Okay features Kayla Cromer in a lead role. The actress herself is on the autism spectrum. Thus making her the first actor on the spectrum to play a leading character on the spectrum, too.
Both of those shows are scripted. Netflix’s new dating show offers a completely authentic, unscripted look into the lives and loves of people on the spectrum.
Love on the Spectrum Tackles Relationship Struggles of People With Autism
Netflix’s Love on the Spectrum follows seven singles on the spectrum as they have their first experiences with dating and relationships. The four-part series also features their families as well as relationship experts.
Love on the Spectrum also includes couples already in a relationship. One of the couples, Ruth and Thomas, have been engaged for almost two years.
The show will give viewers new insights on what it’s like living and loving with autism. Many people with autism have difficulty with communication and social cues, among other difficulties.
People reports that experts will be on-hand to “provide the love-seekers with practical skills to help them navigate what can be a confusing experience for anyone.”
The series debuted on Netflix on July 22nd and many people have already binge-watched all four episodes. It’s getting rave reviews from disability advocates, television critics and laypeople alike. Online media outlet Mashable’s review promises viewers “butterflies” after watching the documentary.
Love on the Spectrum isn’t Netflix’s first attempt at a dating show. Too Hot to Handle and Love is Blind are two recent successes from the streaming giant.
In fact, Netflix has been hitting it out of the park lately with its content. Their recent remake of The Babysitters Club hit all the right notes with the 80s and 90s nostalgia. Netflix also recently released a new season of the cult hit Lucifer.
While other networks promise diversity, Netflix actually serves it up to viewers tenfold.
