Hoda Kotb made her exit from Today last year. However, she made her return to the morning show in light of current events. Namely, she was filling in for Savannah Guthrie, who stepped away from the show after her mother’s disappearance. However, even with Guthrie’s return, producers might have a few reasons to keep Kotb on the show. An inside source recently weighed in on the story.

Savannah Guthrie Returned To Today Following A Two-Month Hiatus

Kotb is known for her work with Today, being a co-anchor of the main show and a co-host of the fourth hour. She first worked as a national correspondent for NBC News starting in 1998.

Back in 2024, Kotb announced she would be departing Today, with her last day being on January 10, 2025. However, she recently returned to the morning show in light of Savannah Guthrie stepping away amid her mother, Nancy’s, disappearance.

Recently, Savannah Guthrie returned to Today earlier this month. Despite this, Today might not want to let Kotb go just yet.

Reportedly, this is in part because Craig Melvin is currently away on vacation. However, producers might also want the friendliest face possible as Guthrie adjusts back to her role on the show.

The Insider Described Why Hoda Kotb’s Presence Is Good For Guthrie

Speaking with Page Six, an insider shared, “It’s Savannah’s second week back, and Hoda is a safe space for her. They’ve been through a lot together and have a meaningful connection. That’s important to a morning show audience.”

As the outlet noted, under normal circumstances, Kotb would likely not be the immediate choice for a substitute host. However, producers might have been convinced otherwise as Kotb held down the fort for Guthrie during her time of need. Sources described her as a “steady hand and calm presence for the staff.”

The source added, “It’s a no brainer for her to step in, and in this circumstance. It just makes sense.”

The two already appear to have a close connection with each other. In addition to working together as co-anchors for over five years, Kotb was the one to interview Guthrie about her mother’s disappearance in late March.

Speaking with the outlet, a source also described why it was important for Guthrie to return to the show. As they shared, it brings her “a sense of normalcy.” However, the source noted, “She’s prepared to go back to Arizona if there are major developments in the case, or wherever she’s needed.”
