Man Pretends To Be Steve Harvey, Steals Thousands

News has come out that a suspect pretending to be Steve Harvey has swindled a victim out of thousands. Notably, this isn’t the first time Harvey’s likeness had been used in scams. Previously, Harvey himself has also spoken out against these scams.
A Suspect Claiming To Be Steve Harvey Swindled A Victim Out Of Thousands In Bitcoin
Harvey is an actor and a comedian with a career spanning decades. In 1996, he starred in his own sitcom, The Steve Harvey Show.
Over the years, Harvey has become well known for hosting Family Feud and some of its spin-offs, such as Celebrity Family Feud. He also notably hosts his own radio program, The Steve Harvey Morning Show.

According to 14 News, authorities are investigating a Bitcoin fraud report. Reportedly, the suspect was claiming to be Harvey himself.
According to officials, the victim even spoke with the suspect, who they believed to be Harvey. They also reportedly sent “him” around $6,000 in Bitcoin. At this time, the identity of the suspect is unknown.
As noted by CNN, Harvey has also recently been the subject of AI-generated deepfakes. Many of these are said to be harmless, such as creating images of Harvey as a rockstar.
However, it was noted that Harvey’s likeness was also being used for scams. Last year, his likeness was used to promote a scam that promised victims government provided funds.
In one alleged video, “Harvey” said, “I’ve been telling you guys for months to claim this free $6,400 dollars.” At the time, other celebrities whose voices were being manipulated included Taylor Swift and Joe Rogan.
The Real Steve Harvey Has Spoken Out Against These Scams
Since then, Harvey spoke out for legislation and penalties concerning these scams. This year, he was quoted as saying these scams are at “an all-time high.”
Speaking with CNN at Tyler Perry Studios, Harvey shared, “I prided myself on my brand being one of authenticity, and people know that, and so they take the fact that I’m known and trusted as an authentic person, pretty sincere.” He continued, “My concern now is the people that it affects. I don’t want fans of mine or people who aren’t fans to be hurt by something.”

In particular, Harvey has also spoken up about an updated version of the No Fakes Act. In a statement, he shared, “It’s freedom of speech, it’s not freedom of, ‘make me speak the way you want me to speak.’” He continued, “That’s not freedom, that’s abuse. And Congress has got to get involved in this thing, because it’s going to end up hurting them, too.”
At this time, it’s suspected that Harvey’s likeness is often used in these scams because his line of work often connects him to money. After all, he is famous for awarding cash prizes on Family Feud. In addition, thanks to his radio program, he is known for sharing advice with fans.
