This Is Why Brooke Shields Left Hallmark Despite Massive Contract
Brooke Shields latest book on aging has solved one of the biggest Hallmark Mystery cases: Why was Flower Shop Mysteries with Brennan Elliott canceled? Moreover, why did the talented actress walk away from a 16-movie deal with the feel-good network? Here are all the fascinating details.
Brooke Shields Shares Why She Left Hallmark
For years, Sleuthers have wondered why Brooke Shields and Brennen Elliott’s mystery series Flower Shop Mysteries was canceled. In her latest memoir, Brooke Shields Is Not Allowed To Get Old: Thoughts On Aging As A Woman, which was released on Tuesday, revealed why she left the Hallmark Channel.
According to US Magazine, the actress revealed that she signed “a massive deal” with Hallmark, which was run by current Great American Family CEO Bill Abbott. This was for 16 movies. The plan was that Shields was going to help rebrand the network. However, she left after filming just three movies, all mysteries in the Flower Shop Mystery series. “I’d completed only three when I realized I had to renegotiate. I’d been hired, I was told, to help change the face of the network.” That was not all.
They wanted me to be funny and bring more comedy to their offerings, but as filming progressed on each of the Flower Shop Mysteries – the franchise I was hired to headline – all the humor had evaporated.
Shields starred in the series based on the Kate Collins’ mystery series. She portrayed Abby Knight. Abby was a former attorney, now a flower shop owner. Just as with almost all Hallmark Mystery adaptations of books, things were changed including the age of the character. The three mysteries were called, Mum’s The Word, premiered in January 2016, Snipped In The Bud, which premiered in April 2016, and Dearly Depotted, which premiered in June 2016.
Besides Brennan Elliott, Beau Bridges also starred in this three-mystery series.
And in true Hallmark fashion, the network said nothing about the future of the series.

Hallmark Was ‘Not Future I Wanted For My Career’
After making the three movies, Brooke Shields realized that this was not for her. “Not everything is for everyone, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with the Hallmark Channel – God knows it has a huge fan base – but it was not the future I wanted for my career.” She added, “I’m never against hard work, but I am now a believer in only saying yes to work that serves me.”
Next, she revealed how this all went wrong. “I simply could not do ten more films that were not what I was promised and felt completely wrong for me. So I quit. I definitely surprised some people and in plenty of ways I surprised myself. I certainly would never have done that in my 20s.”
Despite leaving the Hallmark Channel, Brooke did wind up making a couple of romcoms with Netflix including A Castle For Christmas.
