‘Antiques Roadshow’ Guest’s Husband Will ‘Die’ Over Valuables
Antiques Roadshow has become well known for moments where the people appraising items shock and please the guests who bring them in. This happened many times, with someone saying they paid little for something only to find out it was worth a fortune. In one case, a woman brought in some inherited pottery and was shocked at its worth.
Here is what happened and why she said her husband would die when he heard the value.
Antiques Roadshow: Woman Learns Amazing Worth Of Inherited Pottery
On an Antiques Roadshow trip to Houston, Texas, a woman showed up with her inherited pottery collection. She thought the items could be worth a little bit, but she had no idea what they were actually worth. When she spoke to expert Nick Dawes, she didn’t realize she was about to leave them in awe.
Nick was shocked when he learned what the woman was bringing him to look at. He said he heard she had a collection of Wedgwood Fairyland Lustres. However, he assumed she had four or five pieces. When he learned she had 15 pieces, he was shocked. She then corrected him. She had 17 pieces.
“We couldn’t get them all on the table but what we’ve done is put together a selection of what we think are some of the more interesting pieces that represent the whole variety of Wedgwood Fairyland Lustres,” Nick said (via The Express).
The woman said that her husband’s grandmother gave them the Wedgwood Fairyland Lustres before she passed away. According to the woman, the grandmother told her two grandsons they could have a collection of hers, and her husband chose them.
“She collected glass, pottery, all sorts of different items and my husband picked this, and so it’s been with us ever since,” the woman said.
Antiques Roadshow: The Inherited Items Were Worth A Fortune
Nick explained that it was a “fabulous collection.” The Antiques Roadshow expert also said she had a “good eye.” He said if the grandmother bought these in the 1960s or 1970s, she would have paid a fraction of what they are worth today.
He then explained that Wedgwood was a famous name for English ceramics with over 200 years of production. However, “Fairyland Lustres ware is among the most valuable of all Wedgwood from any period.” That means the woman had some very valuable pieces she brought to Antiques Roadshow.
Nick credited Daisy Makeig-Jones, who joined Wedgwood in 1909 and created her own line (Fairyland Lustres) in 1915, with designing these pieces. He also said the surviving pieces today get broken easily, and sometimes they get repaired.
“The surviving pieces today are really very valuable,” he finished. His estimated value of the antiques was about $25,000 and could be as much as $35,000. The woman was shocked, saying she thought they were worth maybe $500 each.
“I guess I’ll display it now, take it out of the box.” she said. “My husband is going to die when I call him on the way home, he’s going to freak out!”
