Dolly Parton is one of the music industry’s most beloved figures. However, she hasn’t always had the easiest time in the industry. There was a time when Dolly said she considered taking her own life. This all happened in 1984, and it took the help of her friends to pull her out of the depression.

Here is what Dolly said happened at this moment in her life and how she pulled out of it.

Dolly Parton Almost Took Her Own Life In 1984

Dolly Parton released her first album, Hello, I’m Dolly, in 1967 and had her first number-one hit on it with “Dumb Blonde.” She has had hit songs like “9 to 5,” “I Will Always Love You,” and “Jolene” and was on the way to a career that sold over 100 million albums worldwide.

However, in 1984, Dolly was dealing with some medical problems. Despite a doctor telling her to rest as she dealt with intense stomach problems, she performed in concert anyway. She collapsed in the middle of a show in Indianapolis. Dolly had internal bleeding and was diagnosed with endometriosis.

Endometriosis is a condition where the tissue similar to the womb’s lining grows in other places, such as the fallopian tubes and ovaries. She had to undergo two operations to avoid internal hemorrhaging. At the age of 36, she underwent a partial hysterectomy, which ended her chances of conceiving children naturally.

This sent Dolly into a massive depression, and she began to experience mental health issues as a result. She began to binge eat to deal with her depression and also started to drink more. This led to Dolly considering taking her own life.

“I was working hard, and underneath I was a pile of personal and emotional problems,” Dolly said (via The Express). All at once, I fell apart. It was stomach problems and female problems – all over health problems actually.”

Dolly Parton Saw Greater Success & That Made Things Worse

It would seem that finding more success would help Dolly Parton pull out of the depression. However, the success that came next just made things worse. She had her massive hit “9 to 5” and then had her debut in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.

“I was getting away with murder,” Dolly said. “I wasn’t watching what I ate, I wasn’t conscious of nutrition, wasn’t taking care of myself. It was an awful time for me, Every day I thought, ‘I wish I had the nerve to kill myself’. Suddenly, I was a middle-aged woman. I went through a dark time, until I made myself snap out of it.”

Dolly said she would eat three pizzas and still want McDonald’s and fries. She gained 50 pounds. She said that overeating is a sickness the same as drugs and alcohol, and her body finally wouldn’t take anymore. That is when she pulled out of it and began to adopt a balanced nutritional and fitness routine, which saved her life

  1. I feel for Dolly, but millions of us deal with depression, binge eating etc. just because we are not in the lime light doesn’t make it any less painful . I’m glad she didn’t take her own life for her sake. I love the song Jolene and know that Dolly is loved by many.

  3. Coming to terms with medical conditions and depression isn’t easy for anyone. I’m so glad that she recovered. She’s talented beyond compare. I absolutely love her

  4. I feel bad for her. I’m glad she got past it, but I’m upset that she used the word Snap out of it. If only people could . It’s not that simple I feel those words especially from someone famous makes depression more of a taboo.
