Dolly Parton had a chance to judge on American Idol but turned the show down. With the hit singing reality series returning in February, the three judges who have worked the show since its revival remain intact. However, it is fun to know that another iconic legend in Dolly was almost in one of their seats.

Here is what Dolly said about turning down American Idol.

Dolly Parton rejected American Idol job offer

Dolly Parton is one of the most iconic country music singers in history. She is also one of the most beloved ambassadors to the music industry regardless of genre. She just accepted an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, showing her crossover appeal to music fans.

That could have made her a perfect judge on American Idol. She even got an offer to join the show as one of the three judges. However, she rejected the offer, even though she said the show reached out to her on multiple occasions. Her reason for rejecting the offer was pure Dolly Parton, as well.

Dolly said that she loves watching American Idol and The Voice, but could never take part in the shows as a judge or coach. “I get asked every season to be on, I really have trouble judging people, I would have a lot of trouble telling them yes or no, especially no,” Dolly said. She went on to say she hates to see anyone lose and is proud of those who win.

“I just feel their little hearts. I hate it when they don’t win.”

American Idol returning with the same three judges

When American Idol last contacted Dolly Parton remains a mystery. It is possible the show wanted her as a guest for an episode, but the main three judges have not changed since the show rebooted on ABC.

American Idol Season 21 brings back country star Luke Bryan, pop icon Katy Perry, and iconic legend Lionel Richie for another season as the judges on the talent competition. Ryan Seacrest is back as the host, as he has been since the first season, although he took over the sole role as the only host in Season 2.

American Idol Season 21 returns to ABC on Sunday, February 19, on ABC. As with the past few seasons, the first few weeks will air the auditions, which were taped in 2022. There will then be Hollywood Week competitions and from there the show will whittle the contestants down to the first live shows, where fans will get to vote on their next American Idol winner.
