Dolly Parton Gives Hilarious Response To 'Used to Be Young'

Miley Cyrus famously has country music icon Dolly Parton as her godmother. During a recent interview, Cyrus actually shared her godmother’s funny reaction to her recent song, “Used to Be Young.” The pop star also shared her own reaction to the song and how Parton has influenced her.

Dolly Parton Has Had A Career Spanning Decades

Parton has a career lasting decades, causing her to be labeled a “country legend.” She is known for songs like “I Will Always Love You,” “Jolene,” and “9 to 5.”

As an actress, Parton is also known for her roles in 9 to 5, Steel Magnolias, and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. She is also known as the namesake of the Dollywood theme park.

In addition to this, Parton is the godmother of pop icon Miley Cyrus. During a conversation with Harper’s Bazaar, Cyrus recently shared a story about her godmother and her reaction to one of her recent songs.

In 2023, Cyrus released the track, “Used to Be Young.” In this “torch song,” Cyrus looks at her past, with lyrics like, “You tell me time has done changed me That’s fine, I’ve had a good run.”

However, Cyrus noted her godmother felt that she might have been a better fit to sing the song. As Cyrus shared, “She goes, ‘I don’t know if I like that new ‘Used to Be Young’ song because it’s not fair that you’re singing about not being young when you’re young and beautiful. And here I am—I’m like 80—and I’m like, That should have been my song!’”

Cyrus Also Shared Her Own Reaction To The Song

Cyrus herself also noted that it surprises her that she released the song. As she put it, “It was one of those things that maybe, now that I’m a bit more private, I would’ve kept private.” However, she noted, “I’m happy to have shared it. It just feels like a song that’s so personal that it’s hard for people to relate.”

Cyrus also noted Parton’s influence, pointing out that she helped her learn to be open with fans. As Cyrus noted, “She lets everyone in and no one in at the same time.”

Cyrus continued, ‘“Everyone feels like they know her.” However, she also noted, “They’re also okay with the fact that they don’t see her without makeup.”

Izzy Grinspan, who conducted the interview, then herself mused, “It takes me a minute to realize this is probably what Cyrus herself is doing right now. Grinspan described this as “cracking the door open just enough, but no more.”
